);9= tivity, the number of books which,
according to the figures, are being
written and published and read by
Polish Jewry, shows that there is
still plenty of life in Polish Jewry.
In the year 1925, 519 Yiddish and
Hebrew books were published, num-
bering 1,101,300 copies. The aver-
age circulation of a book was 2122
copies which is not at all had. In
1926, the number of books pub-
' lished increased by 14 per cent. 592
more books were published than the
previous year but the average cir-
culation fell to 1,179 or by about
30 per cent.
Yiddish and Hebrew books, in
fact, take for number first place
among the books published in the
various languages in use in Poland,
excepting of course Polish itself,
numbering more than all the books
issued in Ukrainian, White Rus-
sian, Lithuanian, and other non-
l'olish languages, taken together.
in 1925 the Yiddish and Hebrew
books published in Poland formed
5.4 per cent of the total number of
hooks published in the country. But
in 1920 the Yiddish and Hebrew
books numbered only 3.9 percent of
the total number of works issued
and 7.1 per cent of the total num-
her of copies published. The aver-
-ige circulation of a Yiddish or He-
brew book in 1926 was only 43 per-
cent of the average circulation of
a Polish book and less than the av-
erage circulation of an Ukrainian,
White Russian or German book.
Religious work still form the larg-
est proportion of books published
:inning the Jews, In 1926, 156 re-
ligious hooks were issued, which is
about 25 per cent of the total num-
ber of Yiddish and Hebrew books,
while in the Polish language re-
ligious and theological works form
only 10 per cent of the total num-
her of books. Among the Ukrain-
ians, they form 19 per cent, among
the Germans, 35 per cent and
among the Russians C9 per cent. Of
course a large proportion of these
Jewish religious works are pub-
lished for sending Abroad.
One hundred and forty-seven
works in Yiddish and Hebrew were
published in 1926 on scientific and
learned subjects, 22 on music and
the theater, 21 on history, 21 on
• medicine and hygiene, 11 on litera-
ture and 10 on philology. In belles
lettres there were 179 volumes of
poetry, novels and dramas, running
to an average circulation of 957
copies, as against an average cir-
culation for Polish belles lettres of
6,593. The picture is not one to
grow enthusiastic about, but hear-
ing in mind the difficult times
through which Polish Jewry is
passing these last few years and
