Season's Greetings

For decades young men in all
parts of the world have been
taken into the B'nai B'rith Order.
Thousands of them have joined
this great fraternity, this mighty
Jewish brotherhood which oper-
ates in the realm of the mind and
spirit, seeking everywhere to
lighten the burdens of the unfor-
tunate, to disseminate tolerance,
understanding and fellowship, and
to bring to all of us more abun-
dant life. Yet the recent initia-
tion of 10 boys into the I. 0. B.
B. at Omaha, Neb., is singularly
significant. This initiation, which
took place at that city's annual
Fathers' and Sons' banquet, spon-
sored this year by the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation, the Independent
Order of B'nai B'rith and the
Aleph Zadik Aleph Fraternity,
marks the beginning of a new
epoch.
Why? Because these 10 lads
were not merely 10 separate indi-
viduals drawn into the order sim-
ply because their friends or rela-
tives recommended it. No; on the
contrary, this minyon of youths
know very definitely why they
have come into this great borther-
hood of Israel. For months and
years they have been thinking its
ideals and living in its spirit. In-
deed, it is hardly correct to speak
of these 10 young pioneers as hav-
ing just come into the B'nai B'rith
from the outside. It is more to
the point to think of them in the
same way as we think of students
graduating from the preparatory
department of a seat of learning
into the university proper. For
these young Ines come from the

FORDSON, MICH.

Chanukah, known as the Feast
of Illumination and by other titles
of similar intent, will be cele-
brated by Jews everywhere for
eight days, beginning on the eve-
ning of Dec. 19.
The following descriptive notice
of the Chanukah Festival is issued
by the Educational Tract Commis-
sion, composed of representatives
of the Central Conference of
American Rabbis and of the Union
of American Hebrew Congrega-
tions.

The origin of this festival dates
from the stirring historical events
connected with the uprising of the
Maccabees in the year 165 B. C.
E., when Antiochus Epiphanes, the
Syrian king, sought to enforce his
religion on the subject peoples of
his vast domains. Under the ban-
ner of the Asmoneans, as they
were called, Mattathias, a priest
of Modin, a suburb of Jerusalem,
and his sons rallied a small band
of followers who rebelled against
the Syrians. Warfare ensued and
by miraculous victories the few
and feeble overpowered the mighty
army sent out against them by the
Syrian tyrant.
In the year 165 B. C. E. Judah,
the Maccabee, and his army re-
entered the Temple at Jerusalem
and purified the altar by removing
the defilements that had been of-
fered thereon by the Syrians. In
commemoration of this event the
festival of Chanukah was insti-

The incident. leading up to the 1,
Maccabean revolt are thus vigor-
ously and pithily expressed in the
first book of Maccabees:
"And King Antiochus wrote to
his whole kingdom that all should
be one people. and that each
should forsake his own laws. And
he sent letters unto Jerusalem
and the cities of Judah that they
should profane the Sabbaths and
feasts, pollute the sanctuary, and
: build altars and temples and
shrines for idols; and whosoever
shall not do according to the word
of the king, he shall die. And he
' appointed overseers over all the
people, and he commanded the
cities of Judah to sacrifice, city

in the land; and they made ['mel

of refuge which they had. And
