The Independent Order Brith Sholom

RDA 1CL£

DOCTOR ELECTED TO
HEAD NAT'N'L FUND

By BENJAMIN REIBSTEIN,
Treasurer Endowment Reserve.

From 44 members to over 27,000
nettilwrs; from one lodge in Phila-
delphia to over 200 lodges in 100
cities scattered throughout the
United States: from New York to
Los Angeles and from Maine to
Florida—that is the remarkable
record made in 22 years by the In-
dependent Order Brith Sholom, the
youngest and strongest fraternal
order in the United States.
This "Young Men's Order," as it
is popularly called, was organized
Feb. 23, 1905 by 44 young men for
the purpose of safeguarding the
interests of the Jewish people in
Philadelphia. The response to the
appeal of these men exceeded their
fondest expectations. Lodge after
lodge was organized in this city
and very quickly the idea spread to
Trenton, New ark, New York and
other cities.

At its convention in 1926, the In-
dependent Order Brith Sholom took
a great step forward in its service
to its members by creating a schol-
arship fund to be supported by vol-
unteeer contributions, from the
porceeds of which deserving chil-
dren of members will be sent to col-
lege. So quickly has this movement
spread that sufficient money has al-
ready been raised to establish two
scholarships. At the present time,
two qualified young men, one at the
University of Pennsylvania, and
the other at the University of Wis-

The Community Coach Company
of River Rouge, Michigan, has
bought 30 Model 15-B deLuxe Club
International Harvester Motor
Coaches.
This sale of 30 units to one
transportation company indicates
the confidence with which the In-
ternational Ilarvester product is
held. This particular model is
ideally suited to the type of service
for which it is intended, for the
International Harvester Company's
experience enables it to embody in
every model the ideal combination
for the most effective service. This'
is an inbuilt factor of every Inter-
rational Harvester Company's pro-
duct and nowhere is it better illus-
trated than in these 30 coaches sold
to the Community Crutch Company
of River Rouge, Michigan.
Another and important factor in-
volved in the purchase of such •
quantity of motor coaches is the
stability of the manufacturer. The
responsibility of the Harvester
Company is everywhere known. In
every section of the country roach
operators know that they can tie

motive research and almost a cen-
tury of successful manufacturing

Jewish National Fund Asks
Contributions On
Chanukah.

Dec. 18, the first day of Chanu-
kah, has been set aside as :Mecca-
bean Day by the Jewish National
Fund of America, according to an
announcement made by Dr. Joseph
Krimsky, national president of the
organization.
This is the fourteenth annual
day of its kind, being devoted by
Jewish National Fund volunteer,
throughout the country to the col-
lection of contributions for the
fund, which devotes the money to
the purchase of land in Palestine
in the name of the Jewish people.
This day is but one of various
methods utilized by the National
Fund for the collection of its in-
come. All bf these methods are
of a popular character, none of
them demanding more than the
average man and woman, and even
child, can afford.
The Jewish National Fund, which
has been in existence for 26 years,
has the support of all sections of
Jewry, inasmuch as it has no po-
litical affiliations, being interested
only in the purchase of Palestine
soil and in the upbuilding of the
Jewish national homeland. It is
the universal character of the Jew-
ish National Fund which has en-
abled it, within a generation's
time, and from the very small con-
tributions of the masses, to ac-
quire more than a quarter of a
million dunams of land and to
found scores of colonies and set-
tlements in Palestine.
A great many Jewish youth or-
ganizations are sponsoring Macca-
bean Day in their respective cities
and will organize the volunteer
workers for the selling of the flags
for the benefit of the Jewish Na-
tional Fund.

IDEA AND PRACTICE
MUST GO TOGETHER

By Gilbert Harris,
St. Louie

While principles of life are one
thing and practice another, people
want action to coincide with ideas
expressed. Otherwise the cry of
hypocrite is hurled, than which
there is nothing more devastating.
When Mr. A, a board member of
the synagogue, known for his

neighbor, you can't blame the
modern youth for thumbing his
nose at Mr. A's devoutness.

FUIVNITUIV. COMPANY

When a rabbi's personal vanity
clashes with his colleague's per-

sonal vanity and bickering and

backbiting ensue, this is equivalent
to flying the flag of Israel's sur-

render so far as youth is con-
cerned. He well might say: "If
my teachers are petty and small,
what of me?"
Laymen in positions of respon-
sibility in Jewish affairs, no less
than rabbis, must approximate the
lives that they preach to be effec-
tive. An honest man impregnated
with the Jewish spirit, whose life
corresponds to his expressed con-
victions has more weight than 100
sermons and our Jewish leaders
should know this and act accord-
ingly.
If we would eschew the vanities
and cultivate the ponderables,
then the worries that we have
about Judaism will evaporate. .lu-
deism will strengthen itself around
its sturdy oaks.
