Universal's presentation of "Un-
cle Tom's Cabin" at the Shubert
Lafayette Theater, Detroit, login-
nine Nov. 27, marks the seventy-
fifth anniversary of the first play-
ing on any stage of the play that
has outdistanced all other products
of the theater. The special signifi-
cance of this production is that it is
said to be the last word in an
"Uncle Tom's Cabin" show. This
is not the first time that the story
has been filmed. It was a favorite
subject with the actors of the ear-
liest two-reel masterpieces, and
Harry Pollard himself, the man
whose screen ambition is realized
in this gigantic task, made a ver-
sion 12 years old in four reels that
he fondly hoped would he the last
word in screen art. In that pro-
duction he played Uncle Tom and
Margarita Fisher, who plays Eliza
in the new version, was the Topsy
of 1913.
A special musical setting has
been provided for the film by Dr.
Hugo Riesenfeld, the New York
composer. The score will he played
by a symphony orchestra of 25.
men at each performance. The
picture will be shown twice daily
following the opening.
