threw down the gauntlet to the
board of education and demanded

money was spent in colleges, he did
what no Other mayor of Detroit
ever had shown courage to do, ac-
cording to the men in charge of Mr.
Smith's campaign. They also point
out the following facts:

Others had grumbled at the
board's wastefulness, but Mayor
Smith met the issue squarely as he
had net every one during his three
years of administration.

When he came into office and
found the paving ring mulcting
Detroit to the tune of $6 a square
yard, he set to work to break the
monopoly so successfully that the
householder now pays but half of
what he did three years ago. That
was the first thing and so on
through to the latest, his battle
with the council and with powerful
associations of property holders
who seek to widen Woodward ave-
