because it is hoped that the reports
to be made will he of such a nature
that they will evidence the con-
structive angles of relief work and
in addition will show conclusively
how our temporary relief has been
blended in with constructive effort.
James II. Becker of Chicago who,
in the com any of Mr. Warburg
visited the Jewish
J
agricultural set-
tlements in Russia, will report his
observations and impressions, and
E. M. Newman, the noted travel-
ogue lecturer, who visited Russia
this summer and is the first man to
bring out uncensored pictures cov-
ering every phase of Russian life,
has agreed to show those pictures
that cover the Jewish colonies and
give a brief talk on his impressions
from actual contact with the Jew-
ish settlers there.
Dr. Joseph A. Rosen, who took
the last conference by storm with
his recital of the work in Russia
and the part that it has played in
the rebuilding of thousands of lives
in that country, has been prevailed
upon to remain in the country until
this conference, no that he may re-
port in person on the accomplish-
ments of our agricultural program
up to date.
While it will be impossible for
Dr. Bernard Kahn, the European
director, to lie present in person be-
cause of the necessity of his re-
maining in Europe at this time, yet
his detailed report concerning the
activities of the Joint Distribution
committee throughout eastern Ea-
rope will be presented at this Con-
structive Relief conference.
Louis Marshall who, throughout
all of the years has played a must
important part in the raising of
funds through the collecting agen-
cies and the distribution of these
funds through the Joint Distribu-
tion committee, has once more
agreed to present the problems of
both organizations covering the
work of the present and that of the
near future.
The program of this conference
has been so arranged as to allow
sufficient time for reports to be
presented in person by the state
chairmen, state treasurers and by
the leaders of the campaigns in all
parts of the country.
Those who have been living and
working close to the United Jewish
campaign and the Joint Distribu-
tion committee realize that the Con-
structive Relief conference will be,
without question, as important a
got hiring of Jewish 11111 11 and wo-.
men as has ever titer' held in the
history of America.
The conference, through the
courtesy of the Chicago leaders, is
to be held at the 110 .2• Standard club,
considered artihitecturally one of
the finest buildings in Chicago and
acknowledged generally to be the

shine even the great lawgiver.
Such a desire is in itsef a manifes-
tation of idealism, of a high con-
ception of life, and true to this
ideal of hers when Samuel was
born she raised him in the holy
House in the Mishkon, and there
he eventually achieved the coveted
greatness, which the Talmud says
that it was equal to that of Moses
and Aaron combined.
"This story teaches us, among
other things, that a child should be
given an education and that the

school. For the Hebrew schools
are one of the mediums within our
reach to inspire our youth with
zeal and enthusiasm so as to pre.
vent any encroachment upon our
faith. Through such institutions
thousands who might otherwise
lapse into irreligion will preserve
their loyalty to Judaism, and some
of them may eventually become
lenders in our communal and spiv
Baal life.
"Ilere in Detroit the United
Hebrew schools are doing this very
work. Over 2,000 boys and girls
are at present receiving in the
Hebrew schools instruction in He-
brew, the Bible, Jewish History
and Literature, the Talmud, as
well as in religious practices and
traditions. This instruction is
given by competent teachers in a
highly efficient and most modern
manner. It is the opinion of ex-
perts who have visited the schools,
and examined the children, that
they are among the very best in
this country, that they are a ver-
itable fountain of Jewish kerning,
a place which makes the young
cling with love to their ancestral
faith. if you love your child send
him to one of the branches of the
United Hebrew schools."
Education Month, which has
now begun, will end with the
month of Tishri. During this
month all available means will be
used to bring home to the parents
the importance of giving their
children a thorough education.
The work of the Talmud Torah
will be explained. The Talmud
Torahs themselves will be open _to
the public. Whoever wishes to
acquaint himself with the form
and method of teaching employed
in the schools will be cordially wel-
comed Open classes will be con-
ducted in some branches, kinder-
garten rooms, elementary, inter-
mediate and high school classes
will be conducted in the presence
of parents and their friends.
The entire personnel of teachers
has volunteered to make a thor-
ough survey of the various Jewish
sections of the city and acquaint
the people with the excellent work
of the United Hebrew schools.
It must here be explained that
Education Month is not a month
in which to raise funds for the
maintenance of educational insti-
tutions. It is as the name implies,
a month in whch the importance
and the significance of education
will be brought home to every
Jewish parent in Detroit.
