of tin essay which was awarded first prize in the annual prize

Department of Synagogue and School Extension of the Union
of American Hebrew Congregations. The colleges and uni-
versities are divided into sections and first, second, third and

reorganizing Jewish life, enriching
it, of making it a safe refuge from
the despair of doubt. a field of ac•
lion for the display of one ' s tmlimm r•

reorganized and rernalle? The cru-
etsl prablem of Judaism is the prate
twal problem, the possibility o f
having a Jea. ish life in all its full-
ness and completeness, is this non-
Jewish world. Jewish thought can
. undoubtedly be adjusted after a
manner to modern thought, but can
Jewish life be adjusted lit misloorto
life? If we look things squarely in
the fat e. we are bound to adnid
that such a task is impossible. Jew-
ish life in t h e 'modern Gentile world
is an anonialy. Judaism is not only
a view of life, it is also a form of
life. It is not the simple Cold,

constantly give up things, and deny
ourselves pleasures and crush de-
sires, for the sake of ideals we ac-
quire and friends we make. But
the greatest sacrifices of all are
these we make in or not to upset
out native habits and characters,
our timidities. our natural re-
serves. our bashfulness, our sense
Of propriety, of right and of good-
ness. HOW many things do we leave
undone, how many words do we
leave unsaid, how many objects do
we leave unattained, and how (often
(to we let our highest happiness re-
main unrealized, all because of an
inner inhibition. and inner re-
strains. But are these not the fay-,
tors responsible for the survival of o
the Jewish race? For that race, to
suffer is no pain, to obey is no bur-
den, to worship is no servitude.
They will cheerfully make the sac-
rifices. for their native character
and habits, yrs, and to carry on
that spirit of Judaism.
Judaism is at its highest intel-
lectual ebb, anti this intellectual
awakening has been accompanied
by progress both politically and so-
cially. The great success in our re-
ligious history is that the type of
