has complained that youth was

religion and festival occasions,
which forms the religious curricu-
lum through which most of our
youth have passed. Altus, the Jew-
ish spirit in the honie which fur-
nished inspiration and knowledge
of the faith fur unconscious absorp-
tion of the young people is rarer
day by day. At present, t.refore,
this must I.. , supplied by the formal
religious teaching that shall sat-
urate the youth with the Jewish
spirit, building up to it far more
substantial and less shadowy thing
than it now is what someone has
called "The Jew behind the Jew,"
the definite spiritual content and
background of the faith.
Our ti-wish worship must take
note of youth's joyousness, and
must abate the threnody and ac-

Jewish devotions, the paean of

must have removed from it--if our
youth are to be brought back to an
interest in it—the gray cloak of an
historic failure. It must be lifted
out of its minor key, and presented
as it can only truthfully be, as a
progressive triumph.
There should be continued reli-
gious influence, especially in the
period of adolescence, when inde-
pendent thinking. undirected, pre-
ents the greatest of perils to youth.
It is at this time that there usually
appears "the rift within the lute"
which soon "makes all the music
mute." This need is met not only
by the extension of our religious
school classes into high school or
senior departments but by 11 care-
ful and scientific adjustment of the
eurriculum. And along the same
lines there must be an extension of
the religious and spiritual influence
—not less but more so—when the
young people go to college. In ever
greater numbers our youth are
leaving home for the higher schools
of learning. Bow pitiably little is
done by organized Israel to guard
and guide these young people and
keep them in the faith. The denom-
inations of the Christian religions
have for many years recognized

'us into the present discussion. I
shall only point to the tragic cli-

who came out of the loins of Israel, z.
had all that youth could desire,
wealth, position and entry into the
halls of learning, but having not
the restraints and inspirations and
