A Christian Stenographer.

•

The Season's Greetings.

Bay City, Michigan.

It is a national and common
tendency for people to generalize
from the particular. As a result
they often mislead themselves and
mistreat others. An intoxicated
"mick," as happens now and then
under our beneficent rule of prohi-
bition with its rain Of liquor, does
not warrant the generalization so
often made that Irishmen are great
drinkers. One bad Jew does not
imply that .Jews are bad, and yet
ignorant or thoughtless Gentiles
and even some intelligent but un-
thinking Christians are guilty at
times of believing so and, what it
worse, acting with corresponding
contempt. —The Supplement.

I don't know what Is implied by
Christian stenographer unless it
hi that in the sublimation of her
character and constant she emulates
the Great Model whom Christians
are supposed to worship. Now al-
though I have not heard either of
!many stenographers or even of
many Christians who give evidence
that they bother much about the
, life of their Great Exemplar a
young woman in search of a pool-
! tion advertised herself recently as
a Christian stenographer. I sus-
: pent front what I know of ninny
I New York employers that this very
I modest maiden who is more mer-
Icantile than modest, more commer-
cial than Christian, thus advertised
herself to make known to intending
so-called Christian employers that
she is not one of those bright-eyed,
flieient brunnettes whose only de-
. fect is their blood and spiritual re-
lationship with The Most Exalted
Jew of the ages. And yet needing
•ecretar,a1 assistance and not ob-
iecting to Christian assistance even
for Jewish work, I communicated
with the "lady" and terms being
agreed upon received her earnest
assurance that I should expsvt her,
at a certain time. Days passed and
yet not only did she not come but
not even • word of explanation of
her failure. Now I am not going to
use anti-Jewish illogic and say that'
Christian stenographers are liars
but what I do maintain is that this
particular damn-sell may be a
stenographer but is just about an
Christian as those "Christian
firms" that advertise for help and
give notice that • relative of Jesus
is not wanted. I hope that she sue-.
creels to employment with one of
these. That is where she belongs.
