Best Wishes for a Happy New Year.

CLEVELAND, 0. (Special,—.Un-
der leadership of its newly-
elected president, George I. Wirpel,
the Alumni Association of the Jew-
ish Orphan Home at Cleveland is
starting a drive among its member-
ship for $100,000, the alumni quota
of the $1,0110,000 new Building
Fund being sought in District No.
2, I. 0. B. B., for the Home.
Known graduates of the Home
are located in 29 states, the Philip-
pine Islands, Cuba and Canada, and
the Exceptive Board of the Alumni
Association plans to reach them all
to enlist their moral support and
financial contributions toward the
building fund. The Board also
hones that those alumni who are
not solicited because their where-
abouts are unknown, will voluntary
send in their contributions.
Mr. Wirpel, who during a pre-
vious 10-year period was president
of the association, hoc broadcast
the following appeal to alumni of
the Home:
"After a lapse of several years,
I have again been selected to serve
as your Presioh•nt. I appreciate the
honor, and realize that at just this
time I am assuming a responsibility
for the greatest undertaking in the
history of the Alumni Association.
I assume that responsibility with
a feeling of confidence in your co-

sophical beings. My philosophy is
to see humor in everything and to
find joy even in sadness. It is all
life with me. It is all in the game.
One always gains from what one
has suffered. When things run too
smmdhly one becomes careless. Life
to me is just like. a scale. You must
have the ups and downs. After all,
it is the downs that make the. ups,
"Do you want to knew what is
the funniest thing in the world to

advice. That tee me is the biggest
joke of all. Each person is entitled
to his own mistakes. You can't
fight human nature-. We ore not
masters of eurselves."
"Quick, Mks Brice, this is your
turn," came the voice of the maid.
And Miss Brice grabLed her cane.
"Go out front, After the act is
over, collie back tee nip room and
we shall chat seine more."
I found the audience applauding
madly. In the center of the stage
was a lithe boyish figure nonchal-
antly twirling a cane. It was a
very self-possessed figure. Soon the
feet began to do some quick, little
steps. The music grew wilder. The
feet moved quicker. The jokes came
faster. And the. audience- began to
behave just like a bunch of school
children. The act over, it clapped
happily.

Well, Fanny Brice in her dress-
ing room is very pretty, young
W11111:111. I caught her with all her
war paint off, see I ought to know.
She was in the act of attiring her-
self to take the part of a boy. "Just
come right in," she invited me. "I
can talk and dress at the same time,
so don't mind me," she said, as she
adjusted a stiff shirt front.
"That's right, shove. my things
off that chair and make yourself
comfortable. My act comes in
21) minutes, so we better be brisk.
Darn it all," the actress suddenly
exclaimed out of a clear sky. A re-
luctant how had liven the cause of
the outburst. The tie once properly
adjusted Fanny Brice was again
her serene and happy self.
"Oh, yes, you wanted to know
how I managed to become such a
success. I follow a very simple
recipe. Always hit your audience
in the heart, sever in the head.
Remember that and you will be all
right." the actress admonished me
as she scanned me carefully in the
mirror of her dresser. "People
want comedy, but they want pathos,
too. It is always good to touch the
heart. It is true that people enjoy
sornedy, but after the act is ever

But, if vou put in a sad note. every

And a bread smile greeted me as I
glanced into the mirror.
"Now, you know that you soon
forget the good times you have had.
When somebody' asks you about the.
party you attended the other day,
yeti just say, 'I had a ripping time.'
But when someone asks you to tell
him eef the bad luck you have had
of late, you are all there with a big
story with not a single detail left
out. That is the way people are,
They soon forget the good times.
Somehow, the memory of the tel
days always remains.

again appeared. This time as an
Indian maiden, On imitation eef a
lowish girl hiking the part of an
Indian maid. It was delightfully
comical—just sheer good humor.
There was no Jew-baiting here.
Her rendition eef the Jewish girl
was much the same 00 one would
portray a Highland lass in the
sense that
the actress merely
sought to bring out the peculiari-
ties of the character she was tak-
ing. There was no exaggeration.
There was no desire to obtain a
laugh at the expense of a race. The
actress presented a certain type of
a Jewish girl in very much-the same
way that an artist makes a pic-
ture study eef his model.
The next scene found Miss Brice.
a girl eef London's slums. The deft-
ness with which she changed from
OM' character to another was as-
tsunoling. Too see her in this ail
you would have thought that she
never took any other part but that
of a London slum girl. At that mo-
ment I perceived that the strength
of her power laid in her sincerity.
Perfect balance permeates her
acting. There is a gradual move-
ment throughout, working up tee a
definite climax. Fanny Brice moveos
up to her high spots with an almost
mathematical preciseness. At tile.
eight moment she hurls the missile.
There are no rough blotches. Her
acting possesses remarkable mo-
mentum. One gestures moves into
the other. One movement glides
into the next. Retort follows re-
tort. She is full of sparkle and
color, with a racy tinge breaking
out here and there. She has what
is twined a good platform presence.
There is grace in every line of her
supple body.

As Miss Brice turned to her mir-
ror and tiepin smearing her face
with cold cream, I ventured the in-
formation that I had interviewed
Belle Baker. "Do you know shea
lovely little son?" I millet' casually.
"She has? Let Into tell you she
has nothing en me." The fingers
ceased manoeuvering. "I have two
--a boy and a girl. My boy is 26
menths odd and sly daughter is
nearly flour," the actress exclaimed
with prides
"Do you know I'm awfully happy
that I was born a Jewess. A Jew
has an understanding that a non-
Jew has not, nor never could have.
Would yeiu believe it that I never
knew a wore! of Yiddish before I
went on the stage? I learned lay
Yiddish in the show business. Peo-
ple tell me that my Yiddish is a
pretty goal brand and that I have
the real dialect.
"My acts for the most part de-
pict the Jew," she continued. "But
there are certain 'Jew songs' which
are sung en the vaudeville stage
that I would not do for a million
dollars. I mean such songs and
jokes that pull down the races My
smvA are written by Blanche Mer-
rill Dreyfoos and see tee it that she
puts lust enough Yiddish into them
to make them clever. I always try
to present the eccentricities of the
Jew in a kindly light. It is not nec-
essary that it he done in Yiddish.
It could be done just as well in any
languaoe and yet it would get
across."
"You seem tel understand the east
side girl see well. Did you ever live
en the east side?"
"I was horn en Delaney street,
but when quite a young baby niy
narents moved away to Newark.
I My mother was born in Budapest,'
my father in Paris. The family
name is Baruch. When I went on
the stage I changed it to Brice he-
cause that is simpler. My knowl-
edge of the east side I gained when
as a grown girl I used to go down
to Grand street to get things cheap.
"How did I begin? Just by tak-
ing part in amateur nights. Then
I Mined a burlesque show. Max
Spiegel saw me and gave me a part
in 'The College Girls.' In 1910 I
mined the 'Ziegfeld Follies' and I
have been with them ever since.
Between seasons I de vaudeville

The act over, I hurried hack to
the dressing room.
"That was a very good Midi-
Pilee," Miss Brice commented. "By
that I meat] it was sympathetic.
Each audience produces a reaction
of its own. You may be surprised,
but one often encounters prejudice
among a Jewish audience. I once
heard a Jewish woman in the front
row say to the woman in the seat
next to her, 'Hasn't Fanny Briee
