A Rosh Hashonah Editorial

0511 HASHONAll this year takes on all
added significance for Michigan Jewry. For
the first time in history a spirit of unity and
co-ordination between the Jewish communi-
ties makes itself felt in all the institutions of our com-
mon welfare. The blessed spirit of brotherhood is
reflected in this issue of The Detroit Jewish Chron-
icle. From north, south, east and west, from the Soo
to the Straits, wherever Jews have settled to pursue
their peaceful labors in good will and in harmony
with their neighbors, come the happy greetings of
the New Year and the tidings of prosperity and con-
tentment.

R

HIS marks the consummation of a wish long and
devoutly held by all our communal leaders. All
who have the welfare of Jewry at heart, whether it
be for the Redemption of the National Homeland, the
Jewish colonization in Russia, for relief, for recon-
struction. for philanthropy or education, have long
felt the need for a strong unifying force that shall
knit together the thriving Jewish communities of our
great state into a homogeneous body—a Michigan
Jewry in every real sense of the term. This issue,
the Rosh Ilashonah number of The Chronicle, is dedi-
cated to the achievement of that high purpose.

F OLD the New Year betokened to our fathers
the coming of the harvest season, a time "to gar-
ner in that which was sown." Today its ancient sig-
nificance, in its literal sense, is known chiefly to the
Chalutzim of the homeland, those pioneers who have
returned to till the sacred soil that gave the olive
and the grape for the sustenance of our forefathers.

URING the past year there were many things
and events that promised increased good will
between Jew and Gentile. Starting, as it does, with
these frank expressions of friendship from Christian
leaders throughout the state, the new year should 1w

of increased eo-operation and brotherhood,

hope and promise—the New Year. The year 5687

new opportunity, new hope, new light!
