A Letter from Hendrik Willem Van Loon.

(To the Jewish Tribune.)

Old Henry Ford is a simple-minded, kindly mechanic who
knows a great deal about very efficient and very ugly automo-
biles, about a very ef ficient and ugly system of organization
and who is totally ignorant of everything else. Whenever he
has left his own field of activities (ugly but useful cars and
ugly but useful organization) he has fallen into the hands of
shrewd impostors and on the whole he has been a pathetic
figure full of good intentions but just a little bit ludicrous. He
has bought fiddles (God only knows what sort of fiddles). Ile
bought himself a New England Inn that was full of a most
remarkable hedge-podge of badly chosen old furniture and
where the credulous liabbitt was given a very expensive and
very badly cooked meal in the midst of the weirdest assort-
ment of rubbish ever gathered in no sacred a spot. And he
bought himself a newspaper and forced his salesmen to sell to
the mid-western yokels a newspaper that was about the worst
edited, the worst garbled and the worst informed sheet it has
ever been my pleasure to behold.
Anti now you ask me about his sudden voyage to ('anossa
on the Jordan, about his retraction of five years of malicious
and uninterrupted slander? To tell you the truth, I hardly
know what to say. I have a suspicion about the origin of his
anti-Semitic feeling but I may be entirely wrong.
You may remember the famous Ford peace ship and the
infamous Ford peace voyage of the year 1915 or 1916 (I have
forgotten which). The idea for this strange Fordiade came
from one Rozika Schwimmer. (I have even forgotten how to
spell the good lady's name.) She was an ardent Hungarian
Jewess who was going to play Savior of Europe. She got hold
of Henry and being a persuasive, dame she made henry buckle
on his checkbook and start for the European field of carnage
to lift the men out of the trenches before Christmas, It was
a ghastly fiasco. The Children's crusade was less absurd. A
group of hungry males and female's descended upon henry,
filled his ship, ate his dinners (and God knows they could eat!)
and generally made themselves obnoxious. Henry must have
been terribly hurt by this performance. Ile had been duped
and he undoubtedly hated the person who had duped hint.
Hence (but that is only my own private guess) his primitive
hatred of the entire race that was responsible for the indomit-
able Rozika. Hence his silly Dearborn Independent.
Well, he has gone to Canossa or his lawyers have gone to
Canossa for him.
The Dearborn Independent will cease' to conduct paper

But cheer up, some other idiot will continue the good work.
Hundred-year-old men meeting mysteriously in a dark
tower planning the downfall of civilization, poor little urchins
giving their blood for cabalistic rites are a lovely subject, have
always been a lovely subject with which to terrify the masses.
Sons' other idiot will continue the good work.
And the Jews will have something to fight.
Wish to God sometimes the Christians were in the same
plight.

sels and the king was subjected to
further treatment.
During the otter part of March
Ferdinand became worse and it
was announced that he was suffer-
ing from grippe. Queen Marie of
Jugoslavia left Belgrade and hur-
ried to her father's bedside. A
few days later it was announced
that Ferdinand win better. But it
' generally was oelieved that the
truth was being censored.
From then until his death he
lingered on, but it was known all
the while that death was imminent.

BUCHAREST. — One hundred
and one guns boomed a salute to
King Michael I of Roumania at .1
o'clock Wednesday afternoon, an-
nouncing to the assembled multi-
tudes that the 5-year-old monarch
had ascended the throne following
the death Wednesday morning of
Ferdinand the Just, first king of
Greater Roumania, at Castelus pal-
ace, Sinaia. King Michael, under
the tutelage of a regency, now is
ruler of the largest Balkan nation.
The party which a year ago was
willing to support l'rince Carol in
reaching for the throne, appears to
have dispersed, and the govern-
ment has the situation well in hand.
No symptoms of trouble are re-
ported from any district and the
regency seems to have started aus-
piciously on its 12 or more years
tenure of office.
Prince Carol, now at Neuilly,
near l'aris, who abandoned all
hopes of the throne by his re-
nunciation, Jan. 4, 1926, has an-
nounced his intention not to re-
turn to Bucharest.
lone) Bratiano, former premier
and "strong man" of Roumania,
holds the power. With the help of
Queen Marie, it is accepted that
he will unquestionably be a domi-
nating figure over the regency.
The king's funeral will be held
Saturday. This seas decided on
by the council of the regency.
The Brationo government holds
the country in an iron hand.
Public buildings and strategical
points are occupied by soldiers and
the government is resolved that
the decree of Jan. 4, 1926, expel-
ling Carol and instituting a re-
gency in the event of Ferdinand's
death, must be fulfilled.
The present government is un-
alterably opposed to the return of
Carol to the Roumanian soil, even
to attend the funeral of his father.
The body of the king will be laid
at rest in the
genie Corte
De Argues, where King Carol and
Queen Elizabeth rest. Until Sat-
urday the body will lie in state in
the castle at Controceni.
King Michael, the sun of Carol,
has not been a particularly healthy
child. Twice this year his mother,
Princess Helen, hos taken him to
the seashore., presumably to play
in the sand, but actually, it is said
here, to strengthen his constitu-
tion, particularly his throat and
lungs.
Princess Helen, Carol's wife,
who has conducted herself with
great calm and dignity since Carol
abandoned her, is a popular figure
in Bucharest, where, apparently,
all classes sympathize with her.
Michael, the new child king, if
he lives, will ascend the throne and
begin his rule in fact as well as in
name on his eighteenth birthday,
12 years from Oct. 25 next.
King Michael was born on that
date in 1921 and he is, therefore,
not yet 6 years old. Ile has been
sheltered by three nurses—Eng-
lish, German and French—and has
not been permitted to mingle in-
discriminately with other children.

You, Too, Can Succeed

Some day when you arc motoring around
Belle Isle, slow down at the Yacht Club
and admire the magnificent yachts riding
at anchor or alongside the docks.

And remember that the owners were not
always wealthy. They learned the lesson
of thrift, saved consistently and were ready
to grasp the big chance when it came.

There are few accidental successes in
Detroit.

Save regularly—you, too, can succeed.
