(Editor's Note:—In the Ilagada of Passover it is related that five
great rabbis discoursed of the Exodus until dawn. The author has
reconstructed that discourse, identifying the night as between 125
and 12S C. E., for which there is historic warrant, as Akiba's de-
vision to support Bar Cochlea was not made until after R. Joshua's
death. The sketch keeps fair loyalty to the characters and teachings
of the rabbis mentioned in the Hagada narrative. The article may
well be considered an expansion of the four Hebrew lines in the
Passover service, giving the reader an underst anding of the back-
ground of the events and the thoughts which have stirred rabbis
and leaders of that epoch.)
