"The opposition to the Russian col-
onization program is an individual
issue, not a Zionist feeling, said
Reuben Brainin before the Detroit
'Jewish Open Forum last Sunday
aftetntam, speaking on the "New
Russia and the New Palestine." "A
man can be a Zionist and favor the
reconstruction project in Russia to
settle the Jews on the farms; he can
be an anti-Zionist and favor the plan;
he can be a Zionist and oppose Russia's
program or he can 11e a non-Zionist
and oppose it t t support given by
American Jews is purely an individual
matter, the Zionist organization as a
body does not oppose this IlleanS for
immediate aid to so many hundreds
of thousands of our unfortunate breth-
ren in Eastern Europe.
"I see no conflict between the colon-
ization schemes in Russia and Pales-
tine, declared Mr. Brainin, who was
one of the organizers of the Zionist
movement and a close personal friend
ofTheodor Herzl. "Colonization in
Russia is important as a temporary
relief, and a most necessary one, but
under no conditions is it a solution to
the Jewish problem. No other country
can give to the .lews that which Pales-
tine Can give; the spiritual impulse to
Jews throughout the world which
emanates front the Holy Land cannot
be generated elsewhere."
Mr. Brainin, who remained in De-
troit to attend the Ford-Sapiro trial
as special correspondent for the Jew-
ish Daily News, of which he is con-
tributing editor, declared to the writer
that he was surprised and amazed at
the misrepresentations in the daily
press of his lecture. Ile asked the
writer to deny, through the columns
of the Detroit Jewish Chronicle, the
reported statement that he held the
colonies in Russia better for the Jews
than the Palestine state Ile said that
colonists in Russia with whom he spoke
assured hint that they regarded their
status as temporary relief, telling him:
"Mr. liming], the time will come when
we can help Palestine with our time
and our money, now we must save our
own and tar children's lives in Russia.
later we will follow your banner and
do our share toward making the Holy
Land the homeland of the Jewish
people."

Returned From 18 Months Abroad.

The largest audience which has thus
far attended an Open Forum meeting
—considerably more than a thousand
persons — assembled to hear Mr.
Brainin relate his version of the prog-
ress in l'alestine and Russia, as he ob-
served these' countries during his
months residence abroad. Mr. Brainin
has but recently returned from
Europe, having visited the Jewish
centers and attempted to find means
of aiding those co-religionists who are
suffering from anti-Semitic persecu-
tion as well as starvation. Five months
of the time he spent in Palestine.
Speaking of that land, he said:
"After my lengthy stay in the Holy
Land I am absolutely convinced that
Palestine ran and will be built up and
only by the Jews. The thing in Pales-
tine which impressed me the most,
which was more striking than any
other facto was the teaching of the
children --ralsing them with a love for
their own language, Hebrew, a love
far their race, a regard for their home-
land, their country. This is the first
time in Jewish history that children
are learning to harmonize their body
and their soul.
"The colonists, the chalutzim, are
human material unseen before in the
history of mankind. They are idealis-
tic, devoted, without personal C011-
Sacra( ion —1111 they are and have is
given to the country: and to their Jew-
ishness. 1 was visibly impressed at
the mural purity in the lives of the
young men and women; they are
strong in their own self-discipline
which they have developed within
themselves. All, young and old, are
working toward the common goal tee
make 11 lewish homeland in Palestine.
Praises Hadassah Organization.
"The work of the Hadassah Organi•
nation, carried on under the auspices
of the astmen Zionists, is espeei•Ily
appreciated by all who are working
for Palestine. The Hadassah work is
the most important in bringing about
friendly relations between the Arabs
anti the Jews. Through the hospitals,
clinics, work in the schools and among
the mothers and babies, th e II, M. 0,
has treated Arab and Jew' alike, all
who come for air are given the sane'
consideration without charge to the
11010r.
The hospitals and clinics are
non-se•darian and the women i,e'himl
the Hadassah organization are doing
a great wok in thus helping all who
meal help—with nee discrimination."
Mr. Brainin portrayed the daily life
of the chalutzim in Palestine and of
the colonists who have gone hack to
the land in Russia. He graphically
picturts1 their struggles, the hopes and
disappointments, their ability bl e -
come almost insurmountable difficul-
ties to build their lives anew, whether
in the land which they are making a
Jewish homeland or in the country
where heretofore they have been
hurtled f
always to hide in the ghettoes away
from the Czarists agents.
Speaking of Russia, Mr. Brainin
repeated what we have all seen as an
aftermath of the great war: "The
position of the Jewish middleman, the
