Sin—After two years' residence in Mexico, I returned to the
United States, intending to get myself a position and remain here.
In addition to my experience in the states as stenographer, secretary
and office manager, I had acquired in Mexico an adequate knowledge ,
of Spanish, and had become a competent English-Spanish stenog-
rapher and correspondent.
One week in New York filled Me with pain and lothing for Chris-
thin hypocrisy and it wi. h . I will let you supply the word.
One employment agency after another said that as much as they
would like to send me to any number of available positions for Eng-
lish-Spanish stenographers, they could not do so, because of positive
instructions from their clients, Jewish as well us Christians, not to
send them any Jews. The feeling of disgust that welled up in me
came near being hatred of my fellow-,lows; if the Christians were
known to act any more decently I would have been willing to change
my faith. I left New York for Boston, my home town. Here, too,
it seems taken for granted that even in Jewish business houses a
Jewish young man or woman cannot hope to get stny high-grade
office or executive position. . . . I may have to return to "bar-
barous Mexico" to earn my living. There, neither among Jews nor
Christians, in the economic field at least, is there the slightest trace
of prejudice against any one on account of race, religion or color.

I can scarcely credit the statements made. by Miss Goldstein. In all my
observation and experience I do not know of but one Jewish business house
that specifically advertised for non-Jewish help. There isn't a Jewish busi-
ness firm that I know of that has ever taken the position outlined by Miss
Goldstein. It may be that employment agencies, to save their own faces,
SO to speak, have exaggerated the situation anti have Mile a blanket in-
dictment against Jewish firms, so that they themselves will not be accused
of being anti-Semitic. After all the number of firms who could use the
services of an English-Spanish stenographer must be more or less limited
and the young lady might have directly applied to those , firms before accept-
ing as true the statements made to her by the employment agencies.

If the decrease of klan membership reported in Indiana is a criterion
of what is going on in klan circles elsewhere, every klansman can now own
10 nightshirts instead of only one, and he probably can buy the 10 for this
former price of one. From 4(1(1,1)(111 the membership has collapsed to not
more than 40,000 in the state of Indiana, which indicates that even Hoosiers
are tired of being used to line the pockets of some one higher up.

That was done by the royalists. Nobody could have ruined Russia after

Now that Kansas City and Billy Sunday have been heard from, I am sure
that "Red" Lewis, who is tramping through England, will consider his book
a triumph as soon as word has come from Rev. John Roach Straton.

Dr. Will Durant, author of "The Story of Philosophy," in a lecture de-
livered the other night before a Jewish audience, mentioned Schumann-
Ileink as a Jewess. I think the learned doctor is mistaken. Ernestine Schu-
mann-Heink was educated in the Ursuline Convent in Prague, Austria, and
I hardly think she would have attended that convent if she were a Jewess.
It may be of interest to some of ray readers to know that Dr. Durant's wife
is a Jewess.
