LANDSMAN ADVISES ON
ASSURANCE CONTRACTS

The habit is spreading in may
Jewish Houses of Worship on ordi-
nary occasions to allow people to sit
where they please. It is called the
unassigned pew system. It is more
nearly ideal than the present method
still widely to vogue of placing peo-
ple according to the seat they buy
or rent. Under this plan pews are
kept vacant throughout the larger
part Of the year and when in some
cases the propriutor enters and finds
a stranger there he swells with in-
dignation at the presumption of an-
other to occupy his seat. I have seen
this again and again. I have seen
strangers ordered out of a seat into
which they had accidentally or ignor-
antly wandered. And such people
think that they are honoring religion.
They arereally exposing how dishon-
orable their religion is. True piety
is considerate and kind. It delights
to share.
In my first church in Terre Haute,
Ind., years ago there were no un-
signed pews. Intim -I s ! was a pioneer
in the matter but did not bruit it
about as a wonderful discovery as
some rabbis subsequently have done.
I wish that all churches were always
tree and supported by voluntary con-
tributions. This would imply greater
idealism on the part of their con-
tributors and greater religious inter-
est on the part of such as conic at-
tracted by the hospitality of the
place.
A church where monetary distinc-
tions ceased to 'divide end distribute
people would become it House of God
instead of a Clouse of Gold, as too
many such places still are.-The Sup-
plement.

OPEN ARYAN THEATER

VIENNA.-(J. T. A.)-The Aryan
Theater, much talked of among, Vien-
nese anti-Semites, was finally opened
here. The plan of the theater is to
produce only such plays that have
been written by pure Aryans, exclud-
ing Jewish authors :sod Jewisn
themes. The audience is also to con-
sist only of Aryans.

It is interesting to note that the
Aryan Theater is situated in a district
which is mainly populated by Jews.

Hon. Sol Bloom,
House of Representatives,
Washington, D. C.
Dear Sir:-My attention has been called to an article appearing
in the New York Times of Feb. 7 in which you were quoted as
having made certain statements before the Young Men's Club of
Temple Math Yeshurun of Syracuse, N. V., in regard to Mr. Ford
and his relation to the Jews_
Among other things you are reported to have saint: "Ile commits
the can of his health to Dr. Charles D. Aaron, a Jew; his architect
and expert on structural problems is .Albert Kahn, a Jew; his legal
advisor is a Jew, Harry Hellman; his spiritual advisor is Rabbi Leo
Franklin. Dependent eel a Jew as his chief lieutenant in the
urnbuilding of his vast plants, dependent on a Jew for his physical
fitness, Ilependent on a Jew for counsel as to the life hereafter--
whence Ford's anti-Jewish bias?'"
May I say to you, my dear Mr. Bloom, that those statements of
yours are no more accurate than are Mr. Ford's statements in regard
to the Joss. Except for the fact that Mr. Kahn continues doing is
large port of Mr. Ford's architecturel work, there isn't, to the best
of my belief, n scintilla of truth in ell the balance of your statement.
I should think that you yourself would have realized the absolute
absurdity of saying that I was Mr. Ford's spiritual advisor, and that
you would have taken pains to check up all other metters before
making such a statement. As a public wan occupying a representa-
tive position before the people, I think that it is highly reprehensible
in you to spread broadcast a statement of this kind without having
taken the pains of dropping a line to the parties whom you name to
ascertain whether you were justified in linking them up as you have
with the temporal and spiritual affairs of Mr. Ford.
The fact that year, ago, before he had begun his anti-Semitic
propaganda, I had been on friendly terms with Mr. Ford, whom I
publicly repudiated when he began his insidious campaign, and the
fact that Mr. Hellman years ago }lent been a member of it finn-
an the other members being Christians-that had some connection
with Mr. Ford's legal affairs, was certainly not a sufficient basis
for you to make the statements that you have made.
I am not questioning your motives in the entire matter. I am
generous enough to believe that you want to help the cause of Jews
and Jtelaism. But 1 am bold enough to question your judgment in
the matter and to resent your methods. I believe that the very least
you can do under the circumstances is to give publicity to the fact
that you have been in error in this matter.
