Paris premiere as the most interesting picture ever made under French
auspices, will be shown at the Broadway Strand Theater starting Dec. 25.
The big film was site mostly in Latvia, where V. Tourjansky, noted
Russain director, took a large company of principals to find locations ap-
proximately the actual Russian and Siberian locations of the story, which
is a romance of the love and adventures of a young Russian officer of 1859
on a perilous trip through Tartar infested country to Irkutsky, in danger
of capture by Feofar Khan, the Tartar leader. Five thousand troops of
the Latvian army were used as extras, 4.000 infantrymen and 1,000 troop-
ers, in addition to a detachment of artillery. The battle scenes between
the Tartars and the Russian garrisons or relief forces are among the most
outstanding ever done for the screen.
The hero of "Michael Strogotr is Ivan Moskine, a young Russian actor,
whose work in French films has made him almost as well known in Europe
as Emil Jennings.
The picture has approximately two full reels of colored film—scenes
depicting the grand ball nt the Russian Imperial Palace, in all its glory and
brilliance, and also a remarkable sequence showing the festive celebrations
at the Court of Feofar Khan, where, amid the colorful tents of the semi- I
savage host, there are Oriental ballets, gypsy dances, carousals, cavalcades 'I
and other barbaric ceremonies, all in a myriad of colors and presenting
sonic of the most impressive scenes ever made for the screen.
MUSIC
Symphony Orchestra.
Luella Melius is soloist with the De-
: roit Symphony Orchestra at the
eighth pair of subscription concerts
Wednesday, Dec. 29, and Thursday,
Die. 30, one of the major sensations
of recent years.
It is to be noted particularly that
the concert usually given on Friday'
evenings, tit this pair, given Wednes-
day et ening, when the usual Friday
night seats will be honored. The
Thursday cornea and its audience re-
mains unchanged.
Mine. Alelius will be heard In two
very exacting numbers, the vengeful
menace uttered by the Queen of the
Night in Mozart's "Magic Flute," and
Eliira's powerful aria from 111-11ini's
"Puritans," which has been likened to
the mad scene from "Lucia." Both
Vote. Melius' appearances are in the
second half of the evening, and inas-
much as she concludes the program the
audience has the opportunity to de-
mand an encore.
The symphony will be Tsehaikov-
sky's Second, in C minor, a work nev-
er before heard in Detroit.
The program opens with the popular
.iverture written by Mendelssohn out
of his great love for Shakespeare's
"Midsummer Night's Dream."
The remaining orchestral number is
the agreeable and melodious "William
Tell" overture, Rossini's closing mas-
terpiece in stage music, and virtually
marking the close of that brilliant and
popular cancer.
