DR. FRANKLIN WILL
NOT GREET QUEEN
Nov. IT, 1926.
Mr. Edward T. Fitzgerald,
Office of the Mayor,
Detroit, Mich.
My Dear Sir:-1 beg to ac-
knowledge with deep apprecia•
lion in behalf of Mrs. Franklin
and myself the courteous invi•
tation of the committee ap-
pointed by the mayor of De-
troit to attend the dinner in
honor of Her Majesty, the
Queen of Roumania, to be given
at the Book•Cadillac Hotel on
Saturday evening, Nov. 20.
It is • source of regret, how.
ever, that we must decline the
invitation. This is not because
we fail in appreciation of the
many gracious qualities of the
queen, but because we cannot
consistently or in self-respect
through its ruler, do honor to
a land in which the people of
the Jewish faith, for no other
sin than being Jews, are still
treated as outlaws and pariahs.
It is our hope that the situation
of the Jews in Roumania may
somehow be brought to the at-
tention of Her Majesty, and
that she may be persuaded
upon her return to her own
country to lift voice and hand
in defense of ■ million of her
loyal subjects, who have been
unjustly deprived of the funda-
mental rights of human beings.
Very truly yours,
LEO M. FRANKLIN.
