There is an angle of sportsmanship in connection with that defaulted
golf match in Virginia that seems to be overlooked by the critics. The
J e wess who refused to play the finals because the match was fixed on Yom
Kippur showed far more character than the lady who accepted the title
under such circumstances. Rather poor sportsmanship, to say the least, to
win a title because her rival would not sacrifice her religious convictions.
I wonder what would have been said had a devout fundamentalist Christian
l a dy been forced to default a golf match because of her refusal to play on
Sunday? She would probably have been applauded by the press through•
out the country and the golf club that refused to recognize her Sabbath day
onvictions would have come in for a tremendous drubbing. As for the
c
lady who under such conditions would have taken the title—well, her name
would have been anathema. So 1 would like to put down here in the hope
that some of my readers in Virginia may pass it along to the "woman cham-
pion" that I think she is rather sub-normal as a sport and the golf club that
countenanced it rather more so.

as well as instruction in Jewish cus-

so at the synagogue on Sunday morn-
