It is common to hear tales of the

some of the talk is not without basis,
but there are many instances where

Two of the Rhodes scholars from this
country are former football stars,
Preen of Cornell and Parker of Dart-

been far behind. Phil Rakov, basket-

team, is a medical student who is one
of the best eight students in the medi-

player in the Penn State team,

Dr. Hurry Kallet is another who won
praise for his ability both in the
classroom and on the gridiron. Dr.
Joseph Alexander, coach of the New
York Giants, professional football
team, is both a good doctor and ath

tany and nary.

Abolition of the state property tax
as an unnecesary burden on the home-
owners of the state, as proposed by
the Democratic party, is proving of
more than passing interest in the pres-
ent gubernational campaign.
This proposal, which is along the
lines of the so-called Virginia plan, is
now a law and in successful operation
in Virginia, Pennsylvania and other
states. Adoption of the plan would
mean that the property owner would
be all through paying his taxes after
he settles his county and city or town-
ship assessments.
The party, under the leadership of
William A. Comstock, its candidate
for governor, propses to niake up the
deficit in revenue due from such tax
elimination through the specific taxes
of the state.
Mr. Comstock also pledges to cut
state government costs one-third by
abolishing unnecesary beards and em-
ployes. Chief among these economies
is the elimination of the state police,
which he characterizes as a "useless
nuisance."
The proposed tax reform along with
ether progressive declarations in the
Democratic platform have won unani-
mous endorsement of the Democratic
electorate and drawn to the cause a
great many members of the opposing
party, says Horatio J. Abbott, chair-
man of the Democratic State Central
Committee.
"We are waging this campaign with
high expectations of winning." he de-
clared, "because we are presenting to
1 the people of Michigan candidates
whose records and achievements in-
sure clean, progressive, safe govern-
ment; and because our platform pro-
vides specific remedies for the ills that
have accumulated through successive
Republican rule."

"The Big Parade" at Lafayette

"The Big Parade," the stirring mo-
tion picture of the A. E. F'. in France
during the World War, written by
Laurence Stallings, former officer in
the Marines, is playing a return en-
gagement at the Shubert Lafayette
Theater, in Detroit, giving two per-
, formances daily at 2:30 and 8:30.
Crowded houses testify that the inter-
est in this film continues unabated.
The cast is splendid. John Gilbert
arts ti-e ylung a:Wier of gentle breed-
ing who falls in use with a French
girl, played by Renee Adlree; Karl
Dane is Slim, who chews tobacco and
goes to his death with equal noncha-
lance, and Tom O'Brien is Bull, as
valiant as he is hard-boiled.
The most enthralling nv:ments of
the film come when the halation moves
forward in the rumbling cassona and
the tearful parting between the girl
and her Yankee sweetheart or the
stealthy advance through the Argonne
lof the Yanks, with • "what's-it-all-
: about" expression on their faces as
the snipers pick off some of their pals.
Saturday night, October 23, the final
performance will be given.
