Explains Dependability.

According to the chill metallur-
gist of the largest mill that supplies
alloy steels to motor car builders, the
cars that have earned the best repu-
tations for dependability, endurance
and long life, under such rough hard
service as furnishing transportation
to the army and to explorers far be-
yond civilization's frontiers, owe
their good names to the shock-and-
wear-resisting properties of the heat
treated alloy steel!: used in their vital
parts.
At the request of Mr. Garfield of
Fairview Auto Sales, Dodge Brothers
engineering department has supplied
some interesting information regard-
ing the amount of alloy steel used in
their motor cars.
"According to these figures," states
Mr. Garfield, "over 465 pounds of
costly chrome vanadium steel are
purchased for making the vital parts
of each Dodge Brothers chassis. The
other forging. in each chassis require
less than 175 pounds of open hearth
carbon steel.
"Now Dodge Brothers are using a
larger weight of chrome vanadium
steel in aech chassis than they did a
year ago and ■ much larger weight
of this fine costly alloy steel than was
used in the Dodge Brothers car which
won such a good name in the mili-
tary service during the World War.
"Each axle shaft in a Dodge Broth-
ers motor car of 1917 was made from
a 10-pound bar. For forging the axle
shaft of today a specially rolled
chrome vanadium steel bar weighing
over 17 pounds is used. A Dodge
Brothers front spring in 1917
weighed 20 pounds. The front spring
today weigh. over 28 pounds and, as
I has always been Dodge Brothers prac•
tice, every leaf of every spring is of
l chrome vanadium steel.
"Significant in that it accounts for
I the unusual endurance and long life
of Dodge Brothers motor car." Mr.
Garfield continued. "is the fact that
pound for pound Dodge Brothers
chassis contains a larger proportion
of this costly chrome vanadium steel
I than does the chassis of any other
I motor car, regardless of price.
"In building the 207,115 motor ve-
hicles shipped by Dodge Brothers,,
Inc., nearly 48.000 tons of chrome
j vanadium steel were consumed, ap-1
proximately •twice the amount used
