Gentlement :—Rosh Hashonah, the Jewish New Year.
which this year begins on the evening of Septemberg. is one
of the most notable anniversaries in the Jewish calendar.
It is an occasion, too. of much interest to non-Jewish people,
To the Jews of this country it-brings an eloquent reminder
of the good fortune that has attended them under Ameri-
can institutions which assure equality of opportunity . to all
good citizens. They are to be congratulated On the splen-
did spirit with which they have assimilated the purposes
and aspirations of this country's policy. In a nation whose
laws know no favored race or group or religions, they have
won their way because they have proved their genius for
tine co-operation in the common interest.
Sincerely,
CALVIN COoLIDOE.

JEWS MUST SAVE JUDAISM

By RABBI LEO M. FRANKLIN

I return from Europe just as the New Year is about
to dawn with great gratitude in my heart at the improved
economic conditions that are beginning to prevail in most
of the countries of the Old World and in which our people
share. There can be little question that living conditions
for the Jews in central Europe, at least, are better than
they.have been during recent years, although there is still
much suffering and actual want in some quarters. Wher-
ever one goes, however, he hears words of praise for the
American Jews who, during the past bitter years, have
given so generously out of their largess for the relief of
their less fortunate brethren. It should he with a pravr
of thanksgiving to the God Who has prospered hint &id
privileged him to be the helper of his brothers, .that the
Jew- in America should enter upon this New Year.
But there is ;mother task—and, perhaps, a greater ope
--that lies before us. We have responded generously And
graciously to the appeal of physical suffering. Put Jewish
souls are starving and they. too, need nutriment. It is not
enough that Jews should save Jews. They must also save,.
Judaism. And as our brethren abroad looked to us for/
food for their bodies, so also are they looking to us fIi
spiritual nourishment. This was the one dominant !tote that
Avas struck again and again at the great International Con-
ference of Liberal Jews in London. And we shall not dis-
appoint them. We shall face the task of so interpreting the
faith of Our fathers that it will satisfy the soul-hunger of a
growing generation here and abroad. It is with a con-
sciousness of this responsibility that we enter upon the New
Year. May it be a year of material plenty and spiritual
satisfaction to our co-religionists throughout the world.

"Thy people's needs are large." A great truth this,
a truth which at this season of the year must come home to
us with special force and significance.
Many and varied are the problems that loom large
before us. There is the problem of our storm-tossed breth-
ren in Eastern Europe. The condition in which they tied

themselves is indeed precarious. AVe must come to their

rescue. We are told that on every Atonement Day the

High Priest of old prayer. among other things, for a year
in which "Thy people, the House of Israel, may not be

in need of support one from the other." Devoutly do we
hope that this prayer will be answered in the course of
time.
In the meantime, however, we ilare not anticipate any

relaxation of the grave iqsponsibilities which press upon

us to provide for the needs of our hapless brethren.
There is the problem of transforming Palestine into
the land of Israel. The Balfour Declaration assures us of
a Palestine for Jews. It is Israel's determination that will
make for a Palestine of Jews. This is an herculean task,
a task which calls for heroism and sacrifice. American
Israel dare not shirk this task.
But above all we must turn our gaze intently home-
wards. Our one imperious need is a deepening and quick-
ening of the Jewish consciousness, a strengthening of
.
the Jewish spirit, a fuller recognition of the demands which
' i t
Judaism makes upon us, a determined effort to live the
Jewish life.

JEWISH FAITH AN INSPIRATION

By MAYOR JOHN W. SMITH

With the approach of the solemnly impressive observ-
ance of the Jewish New Year, it is my privilege as Chief
Executive of Detroit to express a word of appreciation of
the people whose sublime faith has been one of the finest
inspirations of the ages.
The Jewish people stand as foremost exponents of
idealistic courage and unfaltering devotion. They have
exalted respect for their elders and fealty to family ties.
Despite persecution. suffering and hardship they have kept
faith.
I desire to express formally the well wishes of all the
people of Detroit to the members hf this race upon the
occasion of their renewal of their vows,
