Orthodox Judaism, or, as we prefer
to call it, Torah-true Judaism, is the
genuine historical faith of our people
which is to express itself through the
medium of a true Jewish life. It is as
kingdom of priests and a holy nation
that we were called into being, and the
great truths of the Fatherhood of God
and the Brotherhood of Man were to
be expressed by the mode of life which
the Torah prescribes and counsels.
0
In order that we may translate the
ideals of the Torah into living reality,
0
we are bid to be ever alive to these
postulates:
1. Taskilu hekhol asher taassu-
which means, "Do all that you do in
the most intelligent manner." Even
the greatest idea will lose its force
and effectiveness if it is brought be-
fore men in a clumsy, thoughtless
fashion.
2. Our rabbis tell us that it is a
definite religious duty, hithnaeh lets-
nay bemitzvoth—which means, "Per-
form His commands in the most es-
thetic manner." The most perfect
dish will become repulsive if it is
served on a musty plate. The most
soul-stirring melody will fail on a de-
fective instrument. The great ideas
and ideals of true Judaism will fail
in their appeal if they are presented
in ugly form.
3. The ladder of Jacob, we are
told, with its top reached heaven, but
its foot rested firmly on the ground.
Moses, it is true, spent 40 days and
nights with eternity, but he tught us
that religion was not above in Heaven,
a<.
nor beyond the sea, but on earth, in'
human speech and in human hearts.
