We W ishY You A Most Hearty

of all our Jewish Holy Days. Rosh llashonah is the
one fraught with the utmost religious significance. If there
were nothing else to single out and identify Judaism among
the religions of the world, Rosh llashonah would still be
our badge of honorable identification. At once a symbol
and a dynamic religious force, expressing to the world the
ideal of Judaism, its mission, its meaning and its purpose.
Rosh Ilashonah i , the beginning of a period spiritually
consecrated to self analysis and searching of the soul by
everyone who claims adherence to the principle and tenets

of Judaism.
On this Rosh Ilashonah—the first day of Tishri, 5687
--when we Jews of this fair city of Detroit stand before
our God in devout supplication for a NOV YCIO' that will
be blessed for each and all of us and when we fervently
pray "inscribed for a happy life all the children of Thy
covenant ;" when in looking to the future OM' innermost
thoughts are turned upon the past. let us reflect upon
the manner in which we have carried out God's admonition
to perform the function of Ts'dokoh—justice, righteous-
ness, charity—the most beautiful of our duties as men

and Jews.
Have we, in the year just passed in the midst a our
on
w happy families, considered the widows and the or-
phans, lonely . and destitute?
have we, in the vigor of our own God-given health, di-
rected our attention to those that lie at death's door, strick-
en With disease and without the Means to tight their may
back to strength and life?
Have we, with the best of life still before us, stopped
for a bit to think of those unfortunate aged and decrepit
in this community whose few remaining years can be happy
only if we help to make them so?
The widows, the orphans, the sick, the aged, the in-
-
firm and the destitute, what have we done for them? Let
us reflect wherein, as it concerns them, did we live up to
the standard of Jewish Ts'dakoh.
Let us ask ourselves have we done our share to keep
the torch of Judaism aflame? Have we thought of the
Jewish future of our children? Ilave we contributed our
full share to the maintenance of those institutions whose
work is that of guiding our children along the pat h of
Judaism?
It is upon these reflections that the-heart of the Jew
must dwell on Rush Ilashonah, the Day of Remembrance.
Israel has his place to occupy and his part to play in
the destiny of mankind; his suffering through the cen-
turies has a specific purpose. He has survived because 5I
the world needs his message.
, It is true that we still have a host of enemies who plot
against us sand .deprive millions of our brethren of their
N inalienable human rights, but our hearts have not grown
and faint ; we are still clinging to our optimistic
faith in the ultimate triumph of good over evil; that sooner
or later all peoples of the earth will unite themselves to

Jacob was left alone; and there

May we all be inscribed in the Book of Life gut may
-
this year of 5687 bring about the realization of this
vernally cherished hope.

Professor Schnahle died suddenly, he
was buried in the Catholic ctinniteri,',

not Withstanding the fact that he
never embraced the Catholic religion.
The countess also produced a will, ac-

The attorney for the relatives, Gronti-

The countess admitted the forgery and
the attorney waived charges against
her.

WHAT WILL DETROIT JEWRY DO?

By MORRIS D. WALDMAN,
Director United Jewish Charities.

Within the past two years the Jewish people of this
city have been awakened to the desirability of organizing
their forces in such a way as to meet the larger and more
complex needs of a much-increased and rapidly-growing
population. The phenomenal growth of Detroit. accompa-
nied by the opening up of vast new residential territory,
the extraordinarily rapid shifting of population and the
bewildering influx of countless numbers of people from
other places have produced problems of adjustment in
every direction.
What part shall the Jewish people take in the develop-
ment of this great metropolis? Shall it be it creditable part?
Shall it be an aimless drifting, a fortuitous adjustment, or
shall it be a conscious organization of their capacities for
their own good and the good of the city as a whole? In
what manner and in what directions are the Jewish people
engaging in the commercial, industrial and professional life
of the city? In what degree are they maintaining accepted
standards of conducts in various walks of life? Are our Jew-
ish merchants meticulously observing the accepted codes of
business ethics? Are our physicians and dentists rendering
service to their patients in conformity with the standards
established by their high calling? Are our lawyers ever
conscious of the grave responsibility imposed upon them
as officers of the court, to discourage ethical lapses and
evasions on the part of their clients in the practice of their

business?
The time is past when the Jewish Community must
concern itself only with its negative problems, such as de-
pendency and delinquency—charities and correction. We
must deal with the positive aspects of life—with the con-
trol, so far as voluntary action can be effective. of the life
of the Jewish people in all their relationships.
We recognize our responsibility to see that the Jewish
people shall be good citizens, honorable in their dealings
and mindful of their civic duties. Every Jewish bootleg-
ger, every Jewish criminal, every Jewish prostitute, every
Jewish crook disgraces our community and works an injury
to us all. It is not our duty as an organized community to
apprehend these culprits; that belongs to the public author-
ities. But it is our duty so to organize and conduct our
ocial service tivities as to prevent as far as possible our
growing you from entering into the dubious or nefarious
practices. upplementing the educational and recreational
,
,
work of he city, we must provide adequate educational
and recreational facilities of our own. The synagogues
and the Hebrew schools must co-operate to the fullest ex-
tent with one another in providing such opportunities to
the maximum degree. The social service agencies must co-
operate to establish centers in all parts of the city to pro-
tect our youth from the many vicious and degrading diver-
sions which surround them in this, recently disclosed, most
openly vice-ridden city in the country.
Of course, we must look after our sick, bur widows,
our orphans and our aged. This goes without saying. But
our interests must not cease with them. We must go beyond
this and deeper than this We must do constructive think-
ing and acting so as to develop a wholesome Jewish life.
and to that extent at least—and to a wider extent as an
example and demonstration—we may help develop a clean
and wholesome life for the whole city.
This great task can only be accomplished by a compre-
hensive community organization composed of all the benev-
olent elements harmoniously united in mutual tolerance
and sympathy with one another. Such an organization we
hope the proposed federation will be.

A Prosperous New Year to All Patrons
and Friends.
