In striking contrast to the manner in which the secu-
lar New' Year is celebrated is the observance of Rosh Has-
honah. Instead of a festive spirit with noise and merry-
making the Jewish New Year is observed with prayer and
meditation. It seems to me that this thoughtful, reverent
attitude is singularly characteristic of our Jewish people
who bring to American civilization a profound love for
God and a serious attitude toward life.
We hear much talk these days about worldliness and
materialism but I do not believe that we are any more
engrossed in ourselves than were the people of former
generations. It is a fine thing when great numbers of our
citizens lay aside their worldly problems and turn to sacred
things. Church and state have always been separated in
America but the separation of church and state does not
mean the abandonment of either. It means that each re-
mains supreme in its own field and the man who has a
sincere respect for his own religious convictions is invari-
ably the one most willing to respect the attitude of his
neighbor.
We people of Michigan have much to be proud of in
our tolerant record. Religious bigotry has never made any
progress in this state and I hope and trust that it never
shall. "It is a fine thing for brothers to dwell together in

in Russia and in Poland was presented ,
to English Jewry by Jamb Billikopf,1
executive director of the Philadelphia
Federation of Jewish Charities.
A reception in his honor was given 1
by the United Relief Organization of
Great Britain, under the chairman-
ship of Ur. D. Joehelman. In his wel-
coming address Dr. Jochelman de-1
dared that he received a cable from
the president of the Comzet, the Rus-
sian government department for Fet-
tling the Jews on the land, stating •
that this department has decided to
establish a colony which will bear the
name of Israel Zangwill.
Mr. Billikopf stated that the eco-;
I nomic conditions in Poland have im-
1proved slightly. due to the British
coal strike which has resulted in far.;
ger orders being placed with the Po-
lish industries. There is also a marked
Psychological improvement, due to the
inauguration of the Pilsudski regime.
Speaking of the Jewish colonization
work in Russia, Mr. Billikopf stated
that Jewish religious life in the Rus- •
Ann colonies is fully preserved, ex-1
rept in those colonies founded by the
chalutzim, who are irreligious. The
neighboring non-Jewish colonies main-'
tain a friendly attitude toward the
Jewish settlers. The harvest in the
District of ('heron has exceeded ex-
, pectations. Two hundred and twenty-
I five thousand pod were exported to
Italy, for which the amount of $120,-
I000 was realized, he stated.

"Princess Flavin" the operetta
bawd on the novel and play "The
Prisoner of Zenda" will open the new
Cass Theater on Sunday night, Sept.
12, presented by Lee and J. J. Shu-
bert. This operetta, which followed
the presentation of "Blossom Time"
and "The Student Prince" bears the
distinction of bring the largest and
nest lavish operetta ever produced in
this country or abroad. There are 100
in the soldier chorus and 2011 in the
New York Century Theater cast which
is headed by Howard Marsh of "Blos-
som Time" and "Student Prince"
fame, and Evelyn Herbert, one of the
most accomplished prima donnas on
the American stage. .
Some idea of the ma •siveness of I
"Princess Flavin" cc tonally may be
gained from the fact that the com-
pany and production require a spe-
CIAl train of ears—four cars for scen-
ery, four sleepers and two day coaches.
It is the largest traveling company
ever sent on tour. For this reason the
Messrs. Shubert should tar es , mpli-
mented. Most New York producers
would hesitate about sending so large
an organization out, but the Shuhrtts
set a precedent with "Blossom Time,"
surpassed this with "The Student
Prince" and reached the pinnacle with
"Princess Flavin." An absolute
achievement.

I am happy ind,Zed, both as Governor

of Michigan and personally, to ex-
tend greetings to the Jewish people
for the New Year.

The admiration of the world has
