UNITED JEWISH COMMUNITY NEEDED

By RABBI MOSES FISCHER

Best Wishes to All for a Happy New Year.

T

Operas Are Sung in Hebrew.
I
The Biblical ring of the Hebrew
text, the Jewish style of singing and
the decorations, also of a specifically
Jewish character, have made some
rather startling changed in the char-
acter of the classical operas. The spir-
it and the psychology of the audi-
ences call for the Judaizing of all that
appears upon the Palestinian stage.
The enthusiastic audiences often see
a heroic shouter from Galilee in the
role of the toreador in Carmen.
Operas based on Jewish themes such
as: Judas Maccabees, Samson and De-
lilah, La Juice and etc., discard in
l'alestine their foreign classical garb
and take . on the character of the back-
ground with which they deal. It is in-
teresting to note that in recent years,
an intense nationalistic spirit has im-
pregnated the work of the Jewish mu-
sicians and composers throughout the
world, and they are beginning to cre
ate original Jewish music. The spirit
of creative unrest, moves them to an
effort for national renascence. They
can no more sing of alien gods and
alien aspiration)); they long for hone.
Their spiritual ears, awakened to new
tonal beauty, are turning away from
the over-ornamented, old-fashioned
classicism to hear the pure harmonies
flowing from the harp of the Daugh-
ter of Zion. There have appeared
operas of a genuinely Jewish charac-
ter in Hebrew, such as the "lIa' Clut-
ha," by Weinberg; "The Seed of
Abraham," by Gnessin; "King Ahaz,"
by Almon and etc.
Musical Instructing for Chaluzim.
The Hebrew opera is not only a
source for aesthetic delight. It is
growing into a great institution for
the people's instruction. In the eve-
ning, the Chaluzim, after a hard day's
manual labor, congregate in the stu-
dios and in the rooms of the choral
societies, and bring beauty into their
lives through art. And if the time
will come when the Hebrew opera will
bring its Jewish music to the lands
of the Diaspora, spring from its own
source of inspiration, it will refresh
the withered hearts and uprooted souls
of our people.
Of even greater importance is the
projected conservatory of music which
is to open in Jerusalem. World-famous
artists like Leopold Godowsky and
Jascha Ileifetz visited Palestine not
long ago and assured us that the
American committee for the Jewish
Conservatory of Music is working
very energetically for the constImma-
tion of this plan. On Mount Scopus,
near the Ilehrew University, will be I
built a magnitint temple for Jewish
music where the greatest Jewish mu- I
sicians, viz.: . Goilowsky, Elman, Keels-
ler, Gabrilowitsch, Ileifetz, and etc.,
will lecture and instruct.
There will also be a department for
liturgical music, where our cantors,
our religious singers, who, for hun-
dreds of years. have sung in exile and
persecution, will learn to pour out
their hearts in gongs of redemption.

While the greetings and felicitations which the faith-
ful children of dispersed Israel exchange and extend to
each other vary and differ in their phraseology and verbal
modulations, yet through all of them breathes one spirit—
the spirit of brotherly love and good will, the spirit of ten-
der solicitude and care for the spiritual and physical wel-

My first greeting, humbly and lovingly extended to
my fellow-Jews of this town, is: That the New Year be-

May the inspired saying of the great poet, "that we
promote and advance with great glory in the future, what
we commenced with no disgrace to us in the past," be ful-
filled in its full meaning and bearing in our enterprises and
undertakings of a communal character.
May those moral qualities and elements which loomed
so high and have guided and goaded our public activities in
the last year; may the fundamental and moral elements
and sentiments of earnest dutifulness, selfless brotherhood
and sympathy, whole-souled devotion and consecration to
the cause of our people enter the very fabric of our spiritual
personality to such an extent that they become not only our

resources to draw upon them in historical and hysterical -
times; at moments of new birth in our ancient homeland or
of financial breakdowns or bloody pogroms in the Galuth
lands; but that they shape and mould with their categoric
imperative our daily lives and inspire us to perform with
noble dignity and loyalty the round of our humble tasks
and duties as Jews, citizens and members• of our com-
munity.
709 OWEN BUILDING
In the hour of the great revelation on the Mount of
Sinai, God said: "Who gives that your heart remains, Sho-
lem, intact, unimpaired and whole with me."
Indeed, the great dire need of Detroit Jewry is to keep
our heart, "Sholem, intact ;" intact in its warm glow, in its
1 111 111 1111
a boundless sympathy, in its joyous helpfulness—we need it
if we desire to face in a spirit and with a force becoming
to us the great issues and problem4s.goaisfronting our Jewry!
Detroit Jewry made; indeed, A noble beginning the last
year in the direction to organize a communal unit to re-
spond with united effort and fervor to the call of Israel at
large or to local needs in time of emergency ; but only a
beginning was made to a normal healthy communal life
and no more. We arrived just at the point to gird one's self
to public work, we are yet far from the point to ungird our-
selves and he shall not boast himself the one who girds him-
self—but the one who ungirds himself. Humble prayer for
increased strength is the attitude which behooves us.
It was said by a sage of ancient times, "that the future
of a people shall resemble its past only to such extent and
11 111 11 111 11 111 11 11
in such proportion as the majestic oak, the king of the for-
est resembled the insignificant small, but vital and dynamic
acorn out of which it grew, whose mystic life it absorbs.
whose true essence it preserves and transforms into its

mighty stem into its far reaching shadowy branches, into
the very web anti woof of its being."
May the future of Detroit Jewry be the future of its
communal spirit and institutions, the future of its homes

and shelters for the aged, the orphans, the strangers, the
needy and last, but not least, the future of sJewish institu-
tions not founded yet as hospitals, convalescent homes and
in the line of educational endeavors, the future of its col-
leges for Talmudical learning for the interpretation of our
past in the spirit of Israel—may the radiant glorious Jewish
commonwealth of the future Detroit resemble that of the
present just to the extent as the oak tree resembles the
acorn.
May our strength to things which count, which are real,
increase and grow everyday a little more than yesterday
