NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS

By DAVID W. SIMONS

Having recently returned from a visit to Palestine and
several European countries, I have observed more freedom
and somewhat improved conditions of our people. Let us
hope that the year, 5687, will bring additional amelioration
from the depression and prosecution that are as yet per-
petrated in some of the lands.
As the New Year approaches, it is as well and impor-
tant for the thoughtful Jew to inventory, as it is for the
business man, of his standing, and make resolutions for
the New Year in appreciation for all the good that has
been bestowed upon him. To resolve to provide conditions
as far as possible for those who cannot provide for them-
selves, especially for the sick within our community who
are unable to secure proper and suitable accommodation.
We are in great need of a real Jewish Hospital that will
provide them with proper care and food, and thereby
facilitate their recovery. To that end I have resolved to
contribute $100,000, one-half to apply to the construction
fund, and the remainder, a maintenance reserve, of which
the income only may be used for maintenance, believing
the Jewish Charities will in the near future under
raise the necessary funds for the construction of 'a first-
class Jewish hospital and maintenance fund.

NEW YORK.--In the report sub-
mitted by the Palestine Zionist Exec-
utive to the Keren Ilayesod showing
the allocation of its funds during the
month of May, it becomes apparent
that the work of reconstruction in
Palestine has been seriously ham-
pered by the lack of funds due to
the economic depression in Eu-
ropean countries which has partly
eliminated them as sources of income
for Palestine. In order to sustain
normal activities and to alleviate un-
employment, strenuous efforts will
have to he made to raise the neces-
sary funds to meet the budget.
During the month of May, the
Palestine Zionist Executive received
from the head office of the Keren
Hayesod an income approximately
totaling $230,000. Most of the ex-
penditures were made for coloniza-
tion work, labor, immigration, trade
and industry, and for public health.
The expenditures for the coloniza-
tion department amounted to about
$55,000, bringing the total expendi-
tures for the first eight months of
this year to over $850,000. With the
funds obtained during the month of
d May, houses, barracks and stables
, were erected , settlements; cows,
implements and bee hives were pur-
1 chased and irri! , :ition was carried on

I To alleviate unemployment, the la•
lour department, with the assistance
of the Keren Ilayeinid, undertook a
number of new public works. In Tel
Aviv, by extending a loan to the mu-
nicipality, road work and the leveling
of land, mainly in the new northern
suburb, has been undertaken. By

Rosh Ilashonah this year will be welcomed by Jews
with more pride and satisfaction. Confidently looking for-
ward to 5687, in which greater spiritual, national and
material progress will obtain.
Reviewing the year just passed. unquestionably an
epoch-making one in Jewish history. We note with pro-
found gratification the spiritual bond so universally mani-
fested. by the spontaneous and humanit — alian response to
the call for aid from our fellow Jews regardless whether
for East European relief, or the redemption of the soul
and soil of Israel in Palestine, all urgent appeals have met
with the most generous response.
Not only were the Jews united in material matters,
but evidences of cultural and spiritual co-operation are
obvious.
Although the key-note address by Claude Montefiore
was of a non-conciliatory character towards Orthodoxy.
the attitude of the International Liberal Conference in Lon-
don was much more favorable to Zionism than it has ever
been in the past. Still there is a persistent trend towards
unity in Israel. Reform pulpits are instilling more religion
in their temples. while Orthodox synagogues are moderniz-
ing themselves to meet present day conditions. The natural
growing co-operative tendency, which gains momentum
with time is very evident.
The horizon of Zionist activities was considerably en-
hanced during the month of June with their educational
campaign penetrating Jewish life in the Galuth. Stressing
the need of preparing Jews for the land as equal in im-
portance to the preparation of the land for the people. Both
working hand in hand to attain their goal. Even the
trimped-up, so-called split by the two powerful and useful
Jewish organizations, is merely a personal controversy be-
tween individual leaders, in which the masses are not in-
terested.
Locally tranquility prevails. All Zionists participated
in the United Jewish Campaign, while the list of contribu-
tions to the United Palestine Appeal is increasing year by
year, and we find this year a large number of prominent
non-Zionists, not only contributing materially, but morally
and selflessly to this worthy cause.
Zionism today wields a strong and wholesome influ-
ence in the Detroit Jewish Community. Paricularly so since

the formation of the Zion Council of Detroit. consolidating
and organizations
and centralizing all Palestinian activities
in one central body, under the able leadership of Robert
Mar•il as president, and Mrs. J. H. Ehrlich, vice-president.
