against both measures were voiced in
many quarters. It is likely that the
registration scheme will be abandoned
at least for a time; the deportation

it passed the blouse, it still retained
many objectionable features.
In spite of the direct suggestion of
President Coolidge in his annual mes-
sage, last December, that the immi-
gration law should be so modified as
to make possible the early union of
families sonic of whose members are
already here, the Congress appeared
loath to take any action, the immigra-
tion restrictionists, who have the up-
per hand just now, being fearful lest
a little liberalization may lead tt
more. In December, at a convention
in New York of the Allied Patriotic
Societies, the absurd suggestion was
made that all foreign language news-

Western Lands.
It will not take very long to cast
a comprehensive glance at the out-
standing happenings of Jewish inter-
est in western or more progressive
lands, other than the United States.
England, too, has its anti-alien psy-
chology and the present government
strongly favors continuing the drastic
restrictions in force. So persistent
were the charges against the Home .
Office of discrimination against Jews i
that Sir William Joyhson Hicks, the
Home Secretary, issued a challenge to
members of the House of Commons
"to give one single instance in which,
there has been any anti-Jewish bias
shown by Home Office officials."
The British community has evinced
intense interest in the re-Judaization
of the Marannos of Portugal, who had
for over 400 years secretly observed
Judaism, although there was no lack
of interest in the work of European
relief and in Palestine reconstruction.
In the Union of South Africa there
was much laughter aroused by the or-
ganization of a so-called League of
Gentiles, the avowed aim of which was
to transfer the anti-Jewish boycott
from Poland to the British Dominions.
An event which cannot be passed
over, even though it Was more or less
strictly personal, was the elevation
of Rufus Isaacs, formerly Lord Chief
Justice, and Viceroy of India to a
Marquis, only one step removed from
• duke.
Of France there is little to be said
more than to call attention to the
fact that the naturalization of aliens
has been made much easier, and that
a great many Jews who have come
to France since the war are becoming
French citizens.
There is a great deal to be said
about Germany, however. That it has
not yet recovered from the war any
more spiritually than economically is
shown by such events as the desecra-
tion of the Synagogue at Karlsruhe
and the Jewish cemeteries at Erfurt
