He was 86 years old. Mr. Freud was born in Austria- Hungary and lived there until his sixteenth year, when he was brought to this country by his parents. Af- ter he had worked in and near De- troit for two years, he went to the mining country in the Upper Penin- sula and formed the firm of Marcus Freud & Son. Under this firm name he operated mining stores in Eagle Harbor, Eagle River, Phoenix and Red Jacket. The country then was undeveloped and the only means of communication between towns was by water. Mr. Freud was active in the development of the country and once served as postmaster of Eagle harbor, When he was 36 years old he re- turned to Detroit and married Caro- lyn Ilesslein. A short time later he retired from business and invested his money in Detroit real estate. One of the subdivisions which he devel- oped through his real estate holdings resulted in the opening of Riopelle street from Canfield avenue north to the car shops, and he is credited with having been responsible for the con- struction of the old Brush street car line. Mr. Freud was active in politics in Detroit, giving his adherence to the Republican party. He was respon- sible for the location of the County Building, the site being selected as a compromise when he fought a pro- posed location on the present site of the Recorder's Court. Ile was also active in the affairs of Congregation Beth El and served several terms as president of the con- gregation sonic 35 years ago. Mr. Freud had spent the last three or four winters in California and, ac- cording to his custom, left Detroit for the West last January. T Griswold Street Wharf English Teacher Gives Favorable Testimony When Questioned. PARIS.—(J. T. A.1—Two wit- nesses were questioned during the second examination of Shalom Schwartzbard, which took place be- fore Magistrate Peyre. The first withers, the English teacher, Reginald Smith, aged 66, who was the first to hold Schwartz. bard after Petlura was shot, described the scene of the assassination. He declared that when arrested, Petlura exclaimed, pointing at Petlura: "This is the real assassin!" Smith said that he was convinced by the expression I and behavior of Schwartzbard at the scene of the assassination, that it was a political crime. 51r. Smith further stated that he himself sympathizes with Schwartz- bard, adding that he regretted that he himself had not killed Kaiser Wil- helm and that he would have killed Edith Cavell's murderer if he found , him. The second witness, a Ukrainian named Illarion Kossenko, who is edi- tor of Petlura's paper, Trezub (Tri- dent), published in l'aris, said he was convinced Schwartzbard is an agency of the Bolsheviks. The wit- ness contended that Petlura was not ;guilty of the pogroms in the Ukraine. Admitting that pogroms took place, i Kossenko said they were perpetrated by the armies of the Bolsheviks and Denikin. In the course of Kossenko's exam- ination he was ...confronted with Schwartzbard. In' reply to questions Schwartzbard declared that he never belonged to any political party, and asserted that Petlura's paper, Trezub, published pogrom articles. In at- tempting to deny Schwartzbard's as- sertions, Kossenko charged that Schwartzbard could not read Ukrai- nian. "I lived in Ukrainia up to the age of 19, and understand Ukrainian I very well," Schwartzbard answered. 1 A striking scene took place when Schwartzhard, as he was leaving the ' room, exclaimed in Yiddish to the Jewish reporters: "Jewish blood can- not be shed without punishment!" Of. fermi to Testify In His Behalf. PARIS.—(J. T. A.l—Two Ukrain- ians were arrested by the Paris po- lice in connection with the attempt on the life of Peretz Stein, a Ukrain- ian Jew who was to appear as a wit- ness in the trial of Shalom Schwartz- hard, who killed Semion Petlura. The suspects lived in the same Jew- ish shelter house as did Stein. Many Russian refugees, non-Jews, are liv- ing in the Jewish shelter house main- tained fur the refugees. Stein's condition is still serious, physicians declared. Ile has request- ed M. Ilenri Torres, Schwartrbard'a counsel, to act as his attorney. More details concerning the life of Peretz Stein have been obtained. Ile arrived in l'aris a short time ago with his 8-year-old son, David. When Shalom Schwartzbard shot Petlura, Stein went immediately to Attorney Torres, offering to testify. Ile spoke freely about Schwartzbard's act with his fellow refugees in the shelter house, being continually under the strain of his recollections of the po- groms. Soon he received a number of anonymous letters threatening him with death if he testified for Schwartzbard. Stein, who is a tailor by trade, was born in Rostov Don. After the pogroms in the Ukraine he left for Poland, from where he later emi- grated to the Argentine with his son and two daughters. Several months ago he left the Argentine, intending to proceed to Palestine, but because of lack of funds he remained in l'aris, having left his two daughters in the Jewish shelter for refugees in Buenos Aires. David, his 8-year-old son, testified to the police that the two men who fired at his father shouted to him in Russian: "You Jew, Schwartzbard's defender, take this."
