Beth F.I. Dr. Leo Orecklin read a
paper on "Hellenistic Philosophy."
He outlined the teachings of the fore-
most Greek thinkers, namely those of
Plato, Socrates, Aristotle, as well as
those of the cynics, the sceptics and
the stoics. He dwelt at particular
length on the ideas of the Epicureans,
pointing out how the latter have been
misunderstood to have taught that the
quest for pleasure is the only thing
worth while. As a matter of fact,
while the Epicureans emphasized
pleasure, they no less urged the im-
( portance of security as a check upon
mere desire for the things of the
flesh. Dr. Orecklin concluded by
stating that a philosophy which makes
us look at life in its larger aspects,
while not neglecting the more hum•
ble pursuits of existence, is one
worthy to be guided by.
