I was very much interested in the answer given by Chaim Nachman
Malik, the greatest Hebrew poet to a question asked him by a newspaper
man last week in New York. Asked what is the current opinion in Pales-
tine concerning the collection of Palestine funds in America, Mr. Itialik
replied that the funds raised in America for Palestine appear to the Pales-
tine Jews insufficient, and that the feeling prevails that American Jews
spend much larger sums for trifles than are .given to Palestine. That is
quite true, Mr. Bialik, if, under the heading of "trifles" you include estates,
a fleet of automobiles, a host of servants, rare paintings and other fine
' works of art, constant traveling, contributions to universities and other pub-
lic institutions, some Jewish, some non-Jewish, creation of foundations for
research work; the support of American Jewish theological seminaries; the
erection and maintenance of hospitals, orphan asylums, homes for the aged;
the support of federations; the erection and support of temples and aria-
, vogues; vast sums for European relief. While it is true that the American
Jew of means like to live well, yet it is hardly fair to say that his giving to
Palestine has been so small that it should invite unfavorable comment in
Palestine.

Ajax Conquers Blizzard.

Battling through the worst blizzard
New England has experienced, with a
single exception, in 27 years, two
Nash-built Ajax stock ears made a
hard fought but successful journey
from Boston to Osaipee, New Hemp
shire and return. The fight against
the elements was a deliberately plan-
ned endurance test conducted by four
representatives of the Nash-Ajax dis-
tributor in Boston, their only instruc-
tions being to prove what the Ajax
would do and to "break the cars up"
if it could be done by hard driving in
almost insurmountable conditions that
existed during the blizzard and im-
mediately afterwards.
And when they returned to Boston
the only mechanical adjustment re-
quired was the replacement of a cen-
ter bolt that had been sheared off a
left rear spring of one of the cars and
a report of the representatives sum.
med up the endurance qaulities of the
Ajax as follows: "We all agree that
we have never seen a motor car take
the grief and punishment that we
were forced to give these cars and
stand it as they did."

The author of the Nest admits he doesn't know, and asks for information.

I happen to know Lewis Browne very well. He is not a Christian; he
is not a Unitarian minister. He is a Jew and a rabbi. Ile was never un•
crocked for his radicalism. He has a congregation in Newark, N. J., where
he delights the souls and minds of the intelligentsia. I will say, however,
that he doesn't belong in a pulpit. Ile was at one time a contributing editor
to the New Republic and the Nation. Radical he is. Ile has the peculiar
distinction of being the only rabbi in America who ever united in marriage
two Christians, and this happened in the studio of Edna St. Vincent Millay.
Browne is an able writer, a good illustrator. He is a fine speaker. And a
"buddy" of Sinclair Lewis and Hendrik van Loon. He is mentioned as
"Rabbi Bovine" in Lewis' "Arrowsmith." I trust this information will
bring rest in the Nest.

When all the Jews in other countries were barred from entering Russia
during the regime of Czar Nicholas would you, if you were a Jew and an
outstanding physician, go to the Czar's relief in a critical illness? This
question suggests itself to my mind by reason of the death of Professor
James Adolf Israel of Berlin, recognized specialist in kidney surgery. In
July, 1912, the Czar sent for Dr. Israel to come to Petrograd and remove
a kidney from his 8-year-old son. It is reported that Dr. Israel received a
large fee, but that is beside the question. Professor Israel had a host of
royal patients, among them the King of Spain and the Sultan of Turkey.

Over a year and a half ago I stated in this column that the klan was
on the down hill, which statement was challenged by many readers. But
survey just completed by the New York Times confirms that statement.
The Times asserts that the Ku Klux Klan is definitely on the wane; every.
where it is showing signs of dissolution. The collapse of this astonishing
movement is attributed to the internal dissension, outside criticism, the
wearing off of the novelty and the numerous lawless acts of glorified hood-
lums who used the mask and robe to further their criminal purposes. But
I wish to remind my readers that while the klan is on its last legs that the
conditions which made possible the klan in this country are still present—
religious hate and prejudice. And I shall wait with some degree of curi-
osity the next form with which this bigotry will express itself.

I turn this letter over without comment to the Rev. John Roach Straton:

My Dear Mr. Joseph:—Without any wish to add to the present
sum of religio-theologic controversy, I ask you isn't that chapter of
Matthew a wonderful "appeal to reason?" It sets out to prove that
Jesus was the son of David and traces the genealogy through Jo-
seph, the husband of Mary. If Jesus was the son of David, he must
have been the son of Joseph; but if the son of Joseph, what becomes
of the immaculate theory? Yours curiously,
Chicago, Ill., Jan. 29, 1926.
WALTER HURT.

Thank heaven, at last there has been found a way to determine
whether Willy Pogany is a Jew or not! All that's needed is a little patience
and blood will tell. Dr. E. 0. Manoiloff, Russian blood specialist, can now
tell whether wou are or are not. He took 1,362 Russians and Jews whose
ancestry was traced and he was able to distinguish between the two races
with 88 per cent accuracy. If anyone is in doubt whether there is Jewish
blood in the family all you have to do is take a little solution of cresyl violet
and it disappears entirely in a few drops of Jewish blood. It retains its
color, however, in Russian blood. We can now determine with accuracy
whether there are any members of the Ancient Order of Ilibernians who
have Jewish blood in their veins.

C. Burnett,

As the Pavley-Oukrainsky is corn-
ing to Detroit direct from the Letoile
Theater, Champs Elysee, Paris,
France, without any stop overs and
bringing all of their dainty ballet and
beautiful exotic dancers, who have
proven the sensation of the season in
France, it is safe to assume that they
will offer Detroit something in the
way of daring novelties that will
prove highly entertaining.

This was their third reduction in eight months.
It reflected again Graham Brothers pledge

The year 1925 was the greatest in Graham

It saw them advance to World Leadership in

The Jewish Chronicle of Detroit

noble and generous manner and we
are happy to take this opportunity of
expressing our sincere thanks for
your co-operation. We assure you
that in the future the names of all
the staunch defenders of the Torah

honor.
We hope that you Alit publish this
letter in order that other Jewish pub-
lications may follow your example in
rendering a service, objectively, to a
cause, which it rightly deserves.

I am glad you recommended "Stranger Than Fiction," the his-
tory of the Jews, by Lewis Browne. It was given to me by our
pastor, and I have been distributing it with wild generosity. I think
it one of the best written and sanest little histories I have ever read.
But do you know who the author is? I've seen two dinner parties
spoiled and one week-end party ruined by heated debates about
Lewis Browne. Some say he must be a Jew, for no Gentile could
have so intimate a knowledg of the subject. The consensus of opin-
ion, however, is that he is a Christian, for no Jew could be so free
from prejudice in telling the story. Some say he is a rabbi who was
unfrocked a few years ago for his radicalism. Others say he is a
Unitarian minister. Do you know?

The Zionists, I regret to say, will not sometimes listen to good advice.
If for example, they had waited and "pooled" their drive with that of the
United Jewish Relief and one campaign of $20,000,00 could have been
launched, I am quite sure the results would have been more satisfactory
from many angles. The public is tired of drives and if our leaders don't
watch out they will discover one of these mornings a very unpleasant re-
action. It takes more and more energy to whip a jaded horse. And, while
there are still many wealthy men in the country who are satisfied to con-
tinue to give liberally to every drive, the rank and file, the large middle
class (financially speaking), are becoming more reluctant to open their
purse strings. And wherever one drive can accomplish the same purpose
as two, wisdom easily points the right way. Furthermore, where leaders
stubbornly refuse to combine they should be responsible for the results.

Since advertising is used for every possible purpose, why not use it to
influence members of your community in remembering certain institutions
in their wills? For example, I noticed an advertisement in the Jewish Daily
Bulletin of New York, headed "Is the Jewish National Fund Mentioned In
Your Will?" and then goes on to tell in detail what good such a fund does.
Do you know that a great many men don't know what institutions to leave
their money to? That they consult their lawyers or others, whoh are even
less competent to advise them. And frequently lawyers or others whom they
consult are interested in pet projects, and their advice is usually selfish. So
why not keep constantly before the readers of newspapers the suggestion
"Is the Hospital Mentioned in Your Will?" "Is the Federation
Remembered in Your Will?" "Is the Orphan Asylum Mentioned in
Your Will?" and so on and an forth. And, please, dear reader, do not
imagine that such suggestions would not have their value in increasing the
number and size of the bequests institutions might receive. The only fault
I have to find with the advertisement of the Jewish National Fund is that
it does not follow through. If I wanted to leave $100,000 to the fund I
wouldn't know where to find anyone who could enlighten me as to the scope
and value of the work made possible by the fund. If local institutions
advertise for bequests, be sure to tell the readers where they can find offi-
cials who will be glad to explain in detail their worth to the community.
