INTERESTED IN YOUR SUCCESS
The psychological situation seemed
to be most favorable. The Icor,
through its work of enlightenment,
pointed the way to the American Jev•-
ish masses. It pointed out repeated-
ly and persistently that it was not by
means of charity that the Jews of Rus-
sia would be aided now, but by means
of credits, that pointed the way to self
assistance. The Icor, despite all prej-
udice and the opposition that it met
with on behalf of certain elements,
grew steadily. It succeeded in creat-
ing a widespread interest for the Rus-
sian colonization movement, an inter-
est that soon assumed a concrete and
productive form. The leaders of the
Joint properly sensed this growing
sentiment and eventually came to
identify themselves with this solution
to the ills of the Jews of Russia.
We, on our part, greeted this occur-
rence with joy, hoping now for en-
hanced results, in proportion with the
increased activities of this more in-
fluential and more wealthy element.
We had hoped that the millions to be
raised by the Joint will help in the up-
building of the shattered economic life
of the Jews of Russia.
The more recent occurences have,
however, shown us that our hopes were
but poorly founded. For, no sooner
did the Zionists begin their irrespon-
sible campaign against the interests
of the 3,000,000 Jews of Russia than
the Joint struck its colors and surren-
dered completely to the enemy. Yield-
ing but partly to thethreat of • "split"
at the Philadelphia conference, the ,
Joint has now gone even further and
announced that less than one-third of
the funds to be collected will be as-
signed to the Russian colonization plan
while the rest will be devoted to other
purposes.
This has taken place while no few-
er than 10,000 Jewish families in Rus-
sia are awaiting the promised Ameri-
can assistance in order to settle on the
soil and at a time when no less than
$2,000,000 are needed in order to wind
up the work begun in 1925, aside from
the sum needed for all future activi-
ties.
The Icor therefore appeals to all the
various landsmanschaften to let their
Jewish labor organizaitons and to the
voices be heard in • mighty protest
against those who would become trait-
ors to the vital interests of the Jewish
masses of Russia. After the surren-
der of the Joint, the Icor is the sole
remaining organization whose activi-
ties aim exclusively to support the
Jewish colonization in Russia. We call
upon the Jewish masses to rally
around the Icor, in order that out of
every dollar given by them for coloni-
zation purposes, fully 100 per cent will
be devoted to that purpose, and that
one only!
The message is signed by the na-
tional executive committe of the Icor,
of which D. J. Glassman is chairman
and E. Wattenberg, secretary.
PROF. BORIS SCHATZ
VISITING AMERICA
NEW YORK. — (J. T. A.) — Pro-
fessor Boris Schatz, founder and di-
rector of the Bezalel Art School in
Jerusalem, one of the colorful figures
among the Jewish pioneers in Pales-
tine. has arrived in the United States.
The purpose of Professor Schatz's
visit to the United States is to ar-
range an exhibition in New York on
the occasion of the twentieth anni-
versary of the establishment of the
Bazalel Art School. He brought with
him 47 cases of art objects, paint-
ings, drawings and sculpture, repre-
senting the work done at the school.
Professor Schatz was born in the
Government of Kovno in 1860. His
first work of sculpture, Moses' Moth-
er, was exhibited in Paris in 1892. In
1896 he completed his work, Matthew
the Maccabee.
