Brown, chairman of the United Jewish Campaign for $15,000,000, will give the Union of Co-operatives control of the bank and is a step in the effort that is being made to help the Jews of Poland back to a self-supporting basis. The Central Co-operative Bank of Poland was organised in Warsaw by the Joint Distribution Committee several years ago as a financial institution against which 150 mutual credit societies might draw in order to advance credits to artisans and merchants. The funds of the Co-opertive Bank were supplied by the Joint Distribution Committee through its reconstruction committee, of which Col. Herbert H. Lehman of the New York banking house of Lehman Brothers is chairman. The affairs of the bank, which is chartered according to Polish law, are administered by a directoriate chosen by the Union of Jewish Co-operatives, but the final decision on all major question could, under the original ar- rangement, be made only with the approval of the Joint Distribution Com- mittee.
