(C.99 ■ 718111, 1921.

By au. H. Josolob.)

That reminds me. Announcement is made that Lady Cynthia Mosely,
daughter of the late Marquis Curzon, will stand as Socialist candidate for
Parliament from Stoke-on-Trent. When this daughter of the haughty Lord
Curzon and grand-daughter of the late Levi Leiter of Chicago married
m s sely, the king and queen and a host of other notables attended the wed-
din g. What particularly interests me is that Lady Cynthia's father-in-law
must have been the late Alfred Mosely, the famous Liberal. I met Mosely
when he came to this country many years ago with a group of labor leaders,
whose expenses he paid during the visit. Ile was on immensely rich man
and spent a great deal in endeavoring to broaden labor's viewpoint. While
in this country he was under the wing of Marcus M. Marks, formerly presi-
dent of the Borough of Manhattan. Mosely was a Jew, though I fancy he
did not take an active interest in Jewish affairs. So if Oswald Mosely
the son of the Mosely I knew, then Lady Cynthia, the daughter of the proud
Curzon, is the wife of a Jew. There is one man who can give me the facts,
Marcus Marks, and I hope this paragraph comes to his attention.

Jim Tully, author of "Beggars of Life," reviews "Bread Givers," the
newest book of Anna Yezierska, in the New York World. Tully says that
Anna has lived that which she describes. I think she has. If you will re-
member she wrote "Salome of the Tenement," which I thought was trashy.
But this book Tully thinks is the best book of the East Side of New York
that has so far been written. This statement of his interested me much:

To me the Jew of any type is interesting. In many cases they
are several thousand years ahead of any other race in understanding.
In many of the leading American Ghettoes I have found the young
Jew, though superficially clever and pseudo-intellectual, not nearly
so profound as their often illiterate parents. Miss Yezierska is an
exception. She retains the spirit of ancient and lovable Jews. There
is something in her of the learned rabbi made mellow with years.
She is profound.

Well, I intend to read that book, thanks to Jim Tully.

A friend living in Detroit sends me a letter mailed by the Superintendent
of the Hebrew Christian Mission to "Dear Christian Friends of Israel." It's
a sad story, brethren, a sad story. The superintendent is a practical man.
lie suggests that "the time to sow the seed broadcast to the Jews is during
the warm months when the streets are teeming with masses of all ages."
This leads me to observe that the way to get the children early to bed on
summer nights is not to say "The goblins will git you of you don't watch
out," but that the "Missionaries will ketch you if you don't go to bed."

As open air work seems most effective, a plea iv made for funds to pur-
chase a Gospel Carriage with Chimes. This reminds me of what used to ,
be called a "hoky poky" wagon, where, by ringing a bell, the attention of
children was attracted and then sonic sort of delectable concoction would
ail
be sold. The superintendent understands human nature and says:

That phrase, "long dry summer," is rather ambiguous. I find that
most summers are usually of the some length and that they invariably are
dry. It is a matter for congratulation that the treasurer is convalescing
financially, though he is not entirely out of danger, as I find that $200 is
stillneeded for mortgage and fuel purposes. Though I really cannot under
stand the need for either mortgage or fuel, as the most successful meetings
are held in the open air.

A Gospel carriages with chimes would make it possible for us to
more than double our work.... The chimes would ring out a pleasing
and unusual call to the meetings and we could travel to streets where
it is now impossible for us to go.

But it seems that God hasn't favored the mission cause, for we find thi n
distressing situation revealed in the postscript:

The treasurer has experienced a long dry summer and August 31
found him overdrawn $15.55 at the bank, but he is now beyond the
danger point again and thanks God and takes courage again.
