help make the Jewish youth sound in
body and soul so that they may be
useful members of the community and
useful citizens of • the land. It Calls
upon them to recognize that when-
ever a Jew goes wrong it is because
the community has failed to bring to
bear every influence it could have

the shame is not only upon the one
who has fallen, but must be rightly
shared by those who could have but
did not hold out a helping hand when
he first stumbled. If we do not pro-1
vide proper and adequate facilities for
the boys and girls, we leave them to
find theirs companionship and their
opportunities on the street corners
and in places of public amusement,
good, bad and indifferent. The weak
will find the bad and the indifferent.
We adult Jews can best influence our
youth, and if we fail to influence them
in the right direction we fail not mere-
ly as Jews, we fail as Americans.
"The Jewish Welfare Board is, I
sincerely believe, the instrumentality
through which this responsibility of
the Jew for every Jew whom he can
influence in the right direction can be
brought home to all Jews. It is the
instrumentality through which 'this
sense of responsibility when awakened
can be turned into practiced effort.
And it is the instrument which, after
this practical effort has resulted in
the erection of Jewish centers, will
enable the communities to carry on
the work in these centers. most ef-
fectively."

(Editor's Note.—The work of the
Jewish Welfare Board and its relation
to the Detroit community may be il-
lustrated here. For years Detroit has
been In heed of a young men's Hebrew
association arid because of the general
lack of organization in the community
and the absence of an articulate de-
mand nothing vital has been done. A
few days ago the campaign director of
the J. W. B., Dr. Philip R. Goldstein,
arrived In the city on his way east
from an extensive campaign is the
Pacific coast communities. A com-
mittee representative of communal
leaders and interested organizations
met on Sept. 3 at the Phoenix Club
to listen to and discuss with Dr. Gold-
stein the possibilities of erecting a
Jewish community center in the near
future. As a result of the meeting
immediate steps will be taken to begin
active organization. There already
exists in the city a Y. M. B. A. club
composed of young men anitious td
realize what has long been to them
an ideal. The club augmented as it
expects to be this winter by the young
.Jewish organizations in the city will
form an impressive nucleus for a Y.
M. II. A. membership. With the
awakened interest of the community
and the support of the young men
those interested in the Y. M. H. A.

will soon follow.
