On the eve of the New Year, no matter pending before

templated colonization of our co-religionists in Russia as
part of a general rehabilitation plan. Unfortunately, noth-
ing that is done for the Jewish people or by the Jewish
people, in view of our tragic history and especially the aft-
ermath of the war, assures complete confidence in all quar-
ters. The restoration of Palestine is founded on faith,
hope and effort. An English bug-a-boo, an Arab threat, a
new war menace and smug Jewish prejudice in the dias-
pora can always be invoked against this wonderful enter-
prise. Likewise, Russian pogroms, czaristic restorations,
banditry and Soviet insincerity can be invoked against any
restorative measures on a big scale in Russia. I remember
very well, during the first Joint Distribution campaign, the
exaggerated fear of many who were asked to contribute,
that the money could not be sent across the water and that
it would be confiscated and that there would not be enough.
It seems quite obvious that the Jewish people must take
chances and make experiments if the Jews are to be kept
alive and self-supporting and thereafter Jewish life must
take care of itself. I have sufficient faith in Palestine to
ardently desire this great experiment in Russia to succeed
and, if a large number are trained in agriculture in Russia,
it cannot help but have a splendid effect on Palestine. The
Russian government has everything to gain and nothing
to lose by placing under obligations a large influential and
intelligent people and by bringing them into a normal rela-
tion with things as they are in Russia. No matter how
much we may resent dispossession and uprooting of the
Jews, it is obvious that turning them from dependency or
even from being middlemen into primary producers is not
an evil no matter where it takes place.

ism.
Where are then the balance of the
Marano', today? It is another inex-
plicable phenomenon that, soon after
religious liberty and tolerance were
established in Spain, Portugal and
Spanish America, they disappeared as
by magic. They became absorbed by
the respective populations, and only
a very small and Insignificant number
of them returned to Judaism in Brazil,
Mexico and Central America, where
they still practice it today.
