THE PROUDEST MAN

In the time of Rabbi Jonathan Ey.
benshutz, in the early eighteenth cen-
tury, there was a certain bishop who
proclaimed himself to be the meekest
man in the world, meeker even than

This
es ie claim came to the attention
Mosh
of Rabbi Eybenschutz, who believed
it impossible, since the Pentateuch
says that Moses was the meekest man
that ever lived or will live in this
world.
"But, Rabbi," argued his friends,
"it is a fact, for he shows by his acts
that even Moses could not have been
meeker than he."
Rabbi Eybenschutz said: "That is
iyet to be seen."
And in the course of time the rabbi
journeyed to the city where the
bishop resided; great honors were be-
stowed by the bishop upon his dis-
tinguished visitor. When greeting
him the bishop said: "I am amazed
that the great and learned rabbi of
Israel should belittle himself to visit
me, a humble bishop; what has caused
the rabbi to do so?"
:'Oh," said the rabbi, "I have heard
that you are the meekest man In the
world, meeker even than Moses, and
I thought it would be of benefit to
me to see you and learn your ways."
"You did wisely in that," replied
the bishop, "you have come to the
right place and can learn something
about meekness from me."
"Enough," said Rabbi Jonathan
turning away. And continuing his
remarks to his associates, be said: "I
have never met a prouder man and
more haughty than this bishop."

MORNING PRAYER

Be with me, Lord, as here I pray,
And keEp me by Thy side today.
Please make me gentle, pure and
true
And kind in all I say and do,
Honest in every word and deed,
And quick to help when others need.
Amen.

If one ate dates, thinking it was
bread, and in error pronounced over
them the benediction which is to be
said for bread instead of that over
dates, it does not render the benedic-
tion invalid.—Talmud.
