anti-Jewish massacres took place in
Russia, when, at a public meeting, a
prominent public man was widely ap-
plauded when he said: "Let them
come! I would to heaven it were in
our power to take the whole 3,000,000
Jews of Russia! During the past
year, repeated appeals for the admis-
sion of about 8,000 Jews, who could
not come in under the old immigration
law because of the exhaustion of the
national quotas, nor under the new

restrictions, for the universal regis-
tration of aliens and for abolition of
any time limitations in the matter of
deportation of aliens. In all these di-
rections, these doctrinaire nativists
have enthusiastic allies in several of
the high officials of the United States
Department of Labor and in the chair-
man of the Committee on Immigration
of the House of Representatives.
Anti-alien feeling has gone so far
that the New ork City Federation
of Women's Clubs went on record last
February in favor of an amendment
to the constitution which would pro •

vide that "no person except a natural-
I born citizen of the United States be
eligible to the position of a Justice
of the Supreme Court, a member of
the Cabinet, or a Speaker of the (louse -
of Representatives," forgetting that
the present Secretary of Labor, an
ardent immigration restrictionist, is
himself of foreign birth.
The anti-alien movement is no t
openly anti-Jewish, although evidences
of a suppressed anti-Jewish animus
are not rare. Who knows how the
8,000 emigrant refugees, stranded in
European ports, might have fared at
the hands of Congress had they not
all been Jews? Only ignorance and
bigotry can account for this feeling,
for the achievements of Jews in the
upbliding of America are writ so
large that even those of weakest sight
can see. And yet, Prof. Philip Mar -
shall Brown of Princeton University
could find it in his heart to revive the
anti-Semitic charge of divided allegi-
ance, that the Jew is a wanderer who
does not send his roots deep down
into the soil of the country in which
he may settle. And Dean Inge of St.
Paul's, London, in the course of his
wanderings in this country last spring
must have been infected by the anti-
Jewish virus, for otherwise how could
he, who had not hesitated to attack
anti-Semitism in England, have said
I even in jest that he would "advise the
Jews to rebuild the Temple of Solo-
mon in New York, where they have

garian republicanism, upon their
visits to the United States.
But no aid or comfort was given
to the exponents of this nativist phi-
losophy by the Chief Magistrate of
the United States. Although he was
silent on the subject during the 1924
Presidential campaign, Mr. Codlidge
graciously accepted an invitation to
deliver an address at the laying of the

views and that he recognized the debt
which America owes to its Jews.
Examples of Jewish contributions
to American civilization were not lack-
ing during the year. In the realm
of economic life, for example, Jews
have made great strides in the bet-
terment of working conditions and,
during the year, the organization of
ladies' garment workers, under Jewish
leadership, pioneered in the field of
unemployment insurance. Although,
despite a mistaken notion, the richest
Jews are merely well-to-do when com-

wealth, as the recent publication of

A man is known by the company he keeps
and the clothes he wears. His reputation de-
mands that both be the best. The clothes
question is our question, and we answer it
best by saying that while we can't pick a
man's companions, we can help him pick his
clothes. Clothes bought here have a mark
up of reputation without having a price-
mark-up tagged on. Whatever is fashion-
able among men is being shown right now.
