Sensational accusations accompanied the sudden arrest of Rabbi Hirsch
Frieffiaender, a Chassidic rabbi. Rabbi Friedlaender was accused by the
police of being engaged, with his sons, in counterfeiting Ilungarian currency.
The rabbi, brought before the investigating judge, protested his innocence.
The police went so far as to exhume the body of Rabbi Friedlaender's grand-
father who was also a Chassidic rabbi who died years ago. The police
sought counterfeit money in the grave of the dead rabbi in the town of
Olaszliska. The fact that the body was exhumed caused great mourning
among the Jewish population. Many old Jews, followers of the rabbi, as-
sembled at the cemetery, wept arid :ore . their clothes in mourning.

for Councilman, Helped
Jewish Business Men.

In an interview Edward A. Martin,
endorsed by many of the leading down-
town Jewish merchants as candidate
for councilman, stated that he would
serve their interests in the council to
the best of his ability.
"I have always ha tithe interests of
the Jewish people at heart," Mr. Mar-
tin stated. "This is due to a pro-
found respect for their race in gen-
eral, and my acquaintanceship with
the Jews of Detroit has made me feel
towards them in particular an even
deeper respect. This is not political
flattery. Long before I ever contem-
plated entering the political field I car-
ried out a very important mission for
the Jewish business men, with no self-
ish motive or with any intention of
gaining remuneration."
When the merchants on Ilastings
street and the vicinity were being ter-
rorized by bandits to a great extent,
the Hastings Street Merchants' Asso-
ciation appealed to Mr. Martin's
brother, Joseph A. Martin, who at that
time was acting mayor. Mr. Martin
volunteered to help them. and within
two days' time he accomplished more
than all the guns in the various busi-
ness places could ever have done.
"I am not controlled ay any politi-
cal, business or other organization,"
Mr. Martin continued. "I am seeking
election to the council on my own initi-
ative and without support from any
outside interests. Aa for my princi-
ples I hold not prejudice towards any
creed, race or class.."
