PAGE TEN GLORY TO OUR PEOPLE By RABBI EZEKIEL AISHISKIN LOWER PRICES FRANKLIN Lower prices, announced September 1 on Series 11, Franklin Cars, still further increase their values — already the greatest in Frank- lin's 23 years of fine car manufacture. In Series 11 the adding of high power, com- plete equipment, and the de Causse style de- signs to Franklin comfort, dependability and efficiency was bound to create a sensation and bring new success. With its outstanding beauty and performance, with quality unchanged and prices reduced, Series 11, now more than ever, offers the finest motoring at the least possible cost. Phone or call on us for the new prices and a demonstration. Full equipment, even spare tire, tube, cover and lock, is included at the n.ltv list price. Only tax and freight are extra. FRANKLIN MICHIGAN COMPANY On Rosh Hashonah, New Year, we say the following prayer: "And therefore, 0 Lord, give glory unto Thy people." When we look back and observe the year that has just passed closely we see that this prayer was partly answered. The opening of the Hebrew University on Mount Scopus indicates that part of our old glory has really returned. From many lands came delegations, representing every sect and every denomination; professors, diplomats, among them the illustrious Balfour, all came to be present at the dedication and to bring us their heartiest blessings and congratulations. That great day will remain engraved deeply in our memories and will be written in golden let- ters in the history of our people. The Har Hazophim, Mount of Watching (Mount Scopus) from which one has a commanding view of many things at its foot has become now the great center of attention of the whole civilized world and the new structure is expected to be a temple of knowledge, culture and civilization. At the same time new academies for the special study of the Talmud have been established in Hebron and Jerusalem, institutions which tend to add more glory to our people. Unfortunately, we must admit that the departure of High Commissioner Sir Herbert Samuel from Palestine does not give any glory to our people. We reflect upon this incident with a heavy heart and we ask ourselves: What will the new High Commissioner be to us? A sim- ilar question we find in the book of Joshua, V v, 13, "And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand; and Joshua went unto him and said unto him: Art thou for us or for our adversaries? And he said, Nay, but I am captain of the host of the Lord; I am now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and bowed down and said unto him: What saith my Lord unto his servant? And The captain of the Lord's host said unto Joshua: Put off thy shoe from thy foot for the place whereon thou stand- est is holy." The Jewish nation asks the man whose sword is drawn in his hand, the man who has acquired his military repu- tation: Art thou for us or for our adversaries? Will you be with us to protect our interests in Palestine or will you be with our adversaries? Let us hope his answer will be: Nay, but I am captain of the host of the Lord. I am now come! I am come to co-operate with you; put off thy shoe from off thy foot for the place whereon thou standest is holy! Palestine is holy on account of you, Palestine is holy for you! The old year brings a sense of relief, in that its short- comings and its failures are now to be left behind, while the approach of a New Year brings the hope of something different and better beyond in the path we are treading. Whatever the past year may have been to you, make it a dead history, but let the new year be a living issue. Make it a year of service to your fellowmen. We should also give renewed birth to the traditional idea that all men are created equal, and if we are to be true Americans, we will "Carry on" until that dominating idea is fully realized by our great Republic. Evans, one of the founders of the association, made last fall in a Packard Six from Winnipeg to Vic- toria, B. C., the Canadian govern- ment now is at work on the actual construction of one of the most im- portant links of a great transconti- netal highway through Canada. Bement and Evans drove their Packard for many miles over the tracks of the Canadian National Rail- road because there was no road. They were forced to bump their way over the ties, through tunnels and over many railroad trestles at dizzy heights above the Fraser River, a t most places a raging mountain tor- rent. The present unit of the Canadian transcontinental highway will link Princeton and Hope, B. C., and open up to American tourists one of the most scenic spots on the American continent. It was this section that for years had baffled every effort, of many motor car owners. A gold medal awarded the Packard Motor Car Company for the first car to negotiate the trip had remained as a standing offer for seven years, al- I though many motorists had tried to win it. The Canadian Highway Associa- tion recently wrote Mr. Bement that his pathfinding trip not only resulted In the government ending a contro- versy of long standing and settling on the route taken by the American motorists but centered public (then; tion generally on the necessity of a' Canadian transcontinental highway. The letter added that definite action was expected in the near future for the construction of sections of the pro- posed great highway through Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. "Why such partiality' What was it?" the rabbi asked him in the same vein. "I have never yet committed the sin of suicide," answered the atheist. "Oh," said the rabbi, "I do not think that that would be such • sin in your case; in fact, I rather believe it would be • "mitzvah." "What! Where do you derive such an idea?" "Well, answered Rabbi Lam "It says in the Torah (neut. xiii, 6), in speaking of the unbeliever in general, 'So shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of thee,' and our rabbis, in Baba Metziah (speaking of removing a nuisance), say, one need not be particular as to how it is put away, so long as it is done."
