boys feel they would like to do some pioneering work in Palestine. They
have been impressed with the idea that big, husky fellows are needed to
rehabilitate the holy land and these boys of from 12 to 15 feel that they
are training to do their bit for their people. A Jewishness that embraces
all life's activities is surely more attractive and lasting than a restricted
view of Judaism. Let the Jewish body receive as thorough a training as
the Jewish mind; let us have, as old Nordau used to say, "Muskel Juden."
The fear that this will be achieved at the expense of the Jewish intellect is
entirely unfounded.
So, dear Miss, there seems to be a great deal of truth in your letter,
and a visit to Jewish camp has convinced us that Jewishness is strengthened
by Jewish sport. As to Zionism, well, as a part of Jewish life, it will also
profit by "muscular Judaism."

HUDSON-ESSEX

A LONG SHOT PROPHECY
In a few years you will be hearing of Ash Smiley, Eli Golub and Harry
Addelson. You will hear from them as scholastic athetes of national caliber.
Ash Smiley will be a sprinter who, in 1934, might represent the United
States at the Olympic games. We watched these boys at the Jewish Center
camp and are willing to take a chance. The surprising part about these
youngsters is that they have made up their minds to chalk up a mark as
athletes and they handle themselves accordingly. The trio are less than
38 years old, adding their respective ages, but they alreday know all about
training, dieting and keeping fit. Watch them, and remember that Conzel
told you so.

PHILADELPHIA, JEWISH SPORT TOWN

Isadore Kritcheff, assistant editor of the Philadelphia Jewish Times,
writes among other things:

I

Philadelphia is a great Jewish sport town. We have our Lew
Tendler, Danny Kramer, Benny Bass ... we have tennis stars ... we
have a Jewish basketball league which is second to none in the
country... One of our local baseball teams of all Jewish players is
foremost ... Jack Kaufman was star guard on the Penn team for
three years, and this year won the heavyweight intercollegiate cham-
pionship. There are many other local boys who have made their
names in stardom.

Except the World's Lowest Priced "Four"

Almost Double the Sales of the
Next Three "Sixes" Combined

Thank you, Mr. Editor. Let's have all you know about Philadelphia
Jewish sports. You seem to have the right dope on the matter.

JACK JOHNSON TO BOX FOR JEWS
Jack Johnson, former heavyweight champion of the world, the only
who
knocked
out Jim Jeffries and considered by many as the most
man
skillful human fighting machine ever developed-this same Johnson is
going to box at the benefit to be given by the Brooklyn Lodge B'nai B'rith
at the Coney Island Stadium.
Jack Johnson, the only colored heavyweight champion of the world, is
nearing the age of 45. Still he is considered a fine drawing card and the
B'rith Lodge benefit should be a success. This venture conforms
with what we had to say the other day about boxing playing an important
part in Jewish communal activities. • • •
