JERUSALEM.— (J. T. A.)—The
claims of Arab Nationalistic leaders
that Great Britain and France in in-
troducing the mandate system in Sy-
ria and Palestine, particularly Great
Britain with the issuance of the Bal-
four Declaration, acted contrary to
promises given during the war to the
sheriff of Mecca have no basis in the
light of actual evidence.
Dr. Wolfgang von Weisl, special
correspondent of the J. T. A. in Arab-
ia, in an interview with ex-King Hus-
sein in Akaba, before his departure
from there, was given an opportunity
to see the original letter of General
MacMahon dated August 31, 1915, on
which the claims the creation of a
complete and independent Arab state
are based. The documents establish
in no uncertain manner that although
it is true that Great Britain encour-
aged ex-King Hussein, then the Sher-
iff of Mecca, is his claims to the era-
' tion of an Arab caliphate, there was
no definite promise made with regard
to the frontiers of the proposed Arab
state. The document contains the ex-
pression that "the future will deter-
mine the Arab frontiers."
Subsequent agreements contain no
clause which could be interpreted as
contradictory to the creation of the
mandatory system and the separating
of Western Suds and Palestine from
the Arab territory.
