NEW YORK.-(J. T. A.)-Five of
the foremost living musicians united
April 27 at Carnegie hall to pay hom-
age to Leopold Auer, when he vele-
rated his eightieth birthday. Jaseha
Ileifitz, Ephraim Zinffialist, Joseph
Hoffman, Sergei Ratihmaninoff and
Ossip Gabrilowitsch, former pupils of
the great teacher, played in honor of
Professor Auer, who shaped the fate
of the most famous musicians in the
world.
Leopold Auer was born in West-
pern, a little town in Ilungary, June
7,18x6. His father was an interior
decorator. He received his musical
education in the conservatories of
Budapest and Vienna. From 1003 to
1865 he was a concert master at Dus-
seldorf, from 1006 to 1000 he had a
similar post in Hamburg. Later he
became professor of the Conservatory
of Petersburg and violinist at the Rus-
sia) Imperial Court. •
During his manifold activities he
was in close contact with the musical
geniuses of the nineteenth century,
Lizst, Tchaikovsky, the Rubensteins,
Brahrns, Richard and Johann Strauss
and Rosinni. He also came in contact
with statesmen and rulers, includinj,
Napoleon the Third, the last three
Russian Czars, Disraeli, Gladstone,
von Buelow and others.
