concomitants of the brutal struggle seeped through to
America. The recrudesence of inflamed animosities
stretched across the ocean. America rebuilt the na-
tional, racial, credal barriers which it had so labor-
iously and painstakingly broken down. That which
was exalted during the war has been accentuated. The
jingoes who played upon the superior origins of their
nationals lost no opportunity to drive home the bloody
advantage gained during the years of slaughter and
travail. Had the poisoned fruit of the war been gath-
ered and kept in Europe these scholars, humanitarians
and philosophers would not be so depressed, for they
have known them as an incident of European life for
centuries. But the spread of these ideas, contaminat-
ing America, has made them indeed hopeless. Every
so called Nordic child in America thinks itself superior.
This is an indictment for which Europe is at fault.
But robust, clear thinking, non-credal, non-jingo, non-
racial America can defeat this devastating disease
of Nordic superiority. Democratic America has cured
itself of many contagions from abroad and we have the
faith that we shall succeed in this. We would be happy
to tell Georg Brandes that this distemper is only a pass-
ing thing and with the passing months America will re-
turn to her accustomed ways of no discrimination.
