FASCISTI AND JEWS

The recent statement issued by the
Fascist' of Italy, in which they de-
clare war against the Jews, Masons
and Protestants is another case of
confusion. The number of Jews in
Italy is almost negligible-150,0 00
out of a population of over 40,000,-
000, about one third of 1 per cent.
To talk of a Jewish menace in Italy
is absurd even from the point of view
of numbers. As an actual policy.
therefore, anti-Semitism on the part
of the Fascist' is quite meaningless.
But the Jew is used, not as a real-
ity, but as a sort of symbol. The
Fascisti are not anti-Semitic by na-
ture, because half of them have per-
haps never seen a Jew, and probably
wouldn't know one when they saw
him. But the Jew is used as a propa-

A House With a Vision

By RABBI SAMUEL M. COHEN

IA movement recently inaugurated in Detroit by Jewish alumni
of the University of Michigan and others to establish a Jewish
students' house in Ann Arbor which would serve as a social, cultural
and spiritual center for the Jewish young men and women attending
the university makes the following article of especially timely in-
terest. The project, which is receiving consideration by a committee
of alumni and representative men and women interested in com-
munal progress, was stimulated at a meeting at which Rabbi Samuel
M. Cohen, field secretary of the United Synagogue of America and
author of the article, outlined the activities which a students' house
would promote. In a forthcoming issue The Detroit Jewish Chronicle
will publish an article in which the history of the Jewish student
house project in Philadelphia, recently completed, is recounted.
