Union Men's Test Demonstrates
the Low Cost of Brick
Construction

The Bricklayers' Union recently
conducted a test of the so-called ideal
wall type of brick building. Since
the introduction of this type of laying
brick in Detroit by the brick manu-
facturers' association considerable dis-
cussion over it obtained between
bricklayers who knew this type of
con struction and those who were un-
a ware of it. The contention of the
m anufacturers relative to the ease
w ith which it could be laid was po-
unced. To satisfy itself and to set-
tle all doubt the union delegated three
members at its own expense to make
a test of this type of brick laying.
The test was conducted in the appren-
ticeship brick laying class at the Cass
Technical High School on Nov. 4.
This committee was mac up of a
man who understood laying the
"ideal" wall construction, a man who
had never seen it before but was a
mpetent bricklayer, and a third man
who acted as tender. It was demon-
strated beyond doubt that bricklay-
ers can easily lay one thousand bricks
a day in this "ideal" wall type of con-
struction and that there follows a re-
duction in expense which makes the
co st of brick construction 05 low as
frame construction. The bricklayer
who had never seen the wall before
found rafter brief practice that he
c ould lay it quickly and said that a
real bricklayer could easily learn to
lay a wall as fast and in just as large
a quantity as if it were solid con-
struction.
