711 PAGE NINE pgritoripvisnORONICLE --to the readers of "The Jewish Chronicle" This statement is written by a Jew. It is paid for by Jews. It is addressed to the Jews of Detroit. Jews, as such, have never taken part in politics. This election is no exception to the rule. Jews are active in support of all three candidates for the Mayoralty. Even "Charlie" Bowles is not without his Jewish sponsors. Certain facts, however, of special interest to our peo- ple, merit consideration at this time. It is the purpose of this statement to present them. As the election campaign nears its close certain facts stand out in bolct relief. It is plain that the Ku Klux Klan is seeking control of the City govern- ment. It is plain that Charles Bowles is the Klan candidate. It is plain that a vote for Bowles will be a vote for the Klan. As Jews we have much to fear from Klan supremacy. As citizens we shudder to think of the blot that such power would bring upon our City. To seasoned observers, cer- tain features of this campaign are very clear. One of them is the way that Charles Bowles has "walked away" from Joseph A. Martin since the Primary Election. IN OUR OPINION THE ELEC- TION LIES BETWEEN JOHN W. SMITH AND CHARLES BOWLES. • We believe that a vote for M ar tin a vote for Bowles. Therefore, we strongly urge the election of John W. Smith as Mayor of Detroit. But there are other reasons why we favor Mr. Smith. His strength does not lie alone in his antagonism to the Klan. Judged strictly upon his own merits, we believe him to be the best available candidate. His record, at all times, has been one of efficiency, integrity and loyalty. Laying aside all political consider- ations, the fact remains that John W. Smith has made g ood in every post that he has filled. Particularly is this true of his work as Politmaster of Detroit, where he won the com- mendation of the Postmaster-Gen- eral as "the most efficient postmaster in America." As Jews we have a particular in- terest in the candidacy of Mr. Smith. His work for tolerance and justice merits the lasting gratitude of our people. He was one of the two senators who voted against reconsideration of +h. WAah Libel Bill after that meas- ure had been passed by the State Senate. As Senator he checked the effort to cut through the Jewish Cemetery out Woodward Avenue. He introduced the bill which made possible the establishment of the Wayne County Home for the Feeble Minded, urged by the United Jewish Charities. There has never been a whisper of discrimination or prejudice leveled at John W. Smith. Those who know him vouch for his sense of justice and fair play. A religious issue has crept into the campaign. Basically, it is an anti- Catholic rather than an anti-Jewish one. It has been thrust into the cam- paign with malice and delibera- tion. Broadminded Protestants have fought with Catholics and Jews to defeat it. There is a sure way in which this can be done. It lies in the election of John W. Smith. We urge all Jews to do their part to throw the religious issue out of De- troit politics for all time to come. There are two things that you can do lp help achieve this result. to he First: Vote for John W. Smith for Mayor. Second: Vote "No" on the School Amendment. John W. Smith will be a Mayor for ALL the People' This Advertisement Inserted by a Group of Mr. Smith's Jewish Friends 1
