this mysterious case. So now we have Pithier on trial, and later in the
month Rosenbluth will be placed on trial for murder.

him and Cronkhite assumed the command from Rosenbluth. About three
or four miles from camp they changed the route because of some obstruc-
tion and followed a very narrow trail through a dense forest for three-
quarters of a mile to the place where Cronkhite met his death. A most
interesting feature has been the devotion shown by the well known attorney,
Jonah J. Goldstein of New York, who, without compensation and at great
personal sacrifice, has fought for Rosenbluth and fought openly many men
in Washington who, he believes, have been behind the persecution of Rosen-
bluth. And even now he is in Tacoma at his own expense to fight again for
the life of the captain. At one time, somewhere, by somebody, the charge
was made that certain interests or persons in Washington had made the
statement that the Jewish friends of Rosenbluth ought to raise money for
learance, implying that maybe money would ease the tension of the

"Furthermore, there is a limit to ;
the idea of organization. I think you
can get more money by making ap-
peals for various purposes, especially'
when these have to be made on a na-
tional scale, than you could if this
contemplated organization came into
existence and approached the indi-
vidual with the request for one sum
of money to tar national chest. Fur-
thermore, it would formalize, institu-
tionalize and mechanize Jewish char-
ity and Jewish social service by simply
becoming a tax agency and making
the giver of funds feel that he is pay -
ing a commercial tax. It is good in
matters of charity to leave some
scope for personal interest and per.
sonal enthusiasm and local judgment.
Such an organization as a national'
chest would practicaly mean that all
, the philanthropic activities for Ameri-
can and foreign purposes in our
country would, in the last analysis,
be conducted by one board of esti- ,
mate and apportionment.
