RABBI HENRY. J. BERKOWITZ

Fits

Last year we predicted a momentous year in the his-
tory of Israel. but we never dreamed that so many events
of major importance would transpire.
In America the great outstanding event was the pas-
sage of the immigration bill, which is bound to have a pro-
found and far-reaching effect upon our destinies in Amer-
ica. We are now thrown in upon ourselves. Just as our
brethren have been shut out. we have been shut in, and in
the year that k to come wt. will berin to build the future
of American Judaism without the impetus which cofl . es
from the constant injection of new and vigorous blood into
our veins.
In the twilight of the year let us invoke God's aid in
meeting the great tasks which now confront our religion.
May we be unified in our desire to raise aloft the standard
of the synagogue. May the light of the Torah spread its
beams upon us as we pledge anew our allegiance to it and
may we be "inscribed unto it happy New Year."

"Why not turn this energetic hatred into a brotherly spirit

JUSTICE TO MAN AND DUTY TO GOD

By RABBI JOSEPH EISENMAN

"Oh Israel, return unto the Lord thy God."
How appropriate this text is when Israel is in its hour
of trial and Rosh Hashonah and Yom Kippur force each
Jew to render an account of himself, to face God, for we
have no intermediaries between us and the Court of
Heaven. Each Jew is his own ambassador and his own
judge. Each has, besides his mortal body, a divine intel-
ligence which teaches him right and justice. If he has not
listened to this divine voice, there is still time on Rosh
Hashonah and Yom Kippur, the great days of reckoning,
to ask for mercy and guidance.
The Midrash says of Rosh Hashonah, "This day on
which was the beginning of Thy work is a memorial of the
first clay," and further, "Simultaneously with the creation
of Adam was Rosh Hashonah decreed and set apart." Ac-
cording to the Midrash, the Tekiah that we blow on Rosh
Hashonah dates back to the expulsion of Adam and Eve,
for God drove them out of Eden with a Tekiah and a
Teruoh.
It is written in the Midrash that after Adam and Eve
were driven out of Eden, Adam spent his days in mourning.
Above all, he wept because God had forsaken him for his
disobedience. One day he met Cain, the murderer of his
brother Abel. Adam asked him what punishment God
had visited on him for the crime. Cain answered, "Though
I killed my brother, yet, because I repented, God has shown
me mercy." Thus Adam was greatly heartened, for he saw
that with nian's first disobedience God's mercy shone forth.
It is further related that after Cain killed his brother,
he, in his arrogance, thought himself master of the earth.
for he had made a pact with his brother Abel before the
murder to share the earth with him. Now that Abel was
dead, he, Cain, was lord of all. "God is in His Heaven,"
thought Cain, "and my offerings will content Him, for all
Ile wants of man is burnt offerings. He is too great to con-
cern Himself with my doings." How astounded he was to
hear a voice from heaven call forth a terrible denunciation
of his deed!
We still have the same primitive idea of the relation
between man and God. How foolish are the people who
try to lock God up in His heaven, to limit His sphere! The
earthly affairs of man, they think, are beyond His ken.
The attitude of such people is that God has His heaven and
man has the earth, and each should operate in his own
sphere. -
This attitude is responsible for the fact that we are
feeding our body at the expense of our soul. In this age
of materialism we are apt to forget the spiritual. In for-
getting God, we are also forgetting our true relations with
our neighbors. The divine commandments must first be
kept between man and man, and then between man and
God. This is the message of Rosh Hashonah—to be just in
our relations with our fellow men. On Rosh Hashonah we
are judged on our conduct to our fellow men, on Yom Kip-
pur we are judged on our relations to God. God says,
"I am not at peace in Heaven until I am at peace on earth."

For Utility, Comfort, Value

With the right performance
assured, pick your closed car
with the idea of utility and
comfort uppermost.

On that basis examine the
good Maxwell Club Sedan.

Try all the seats. Stretch
your legs. See how easy it
is to get in and out.

Then drive it on the road

and experience its driving
and riding comfort.
Of course, being a good
Maxwell, you know you can
count on care-free, economi-
cal performance.
An ideal car for the family,
for the busy man or busy
woman; and, by long odds,
the best value in the four-
cylinder field.
