THAT TRUTH CEASE NOT FOREVER I Ranked Among Largest
In All Detroit.
By RABBI E. AISHISKIN
On Rosh Ilashonah we look into the past year and see
what is has left ni its waks for us, the children of Israel.
The past year certainly was not signalized by blood-
shed and cruel warfare, but our brethren have neverthe-
less suffered untold agonies.
All doors have been shut for them, and in consequence
of this we suffered in this peaceful year more than in any
year of war.
Says the prophet, Jeremiah: "Those smitten by the
sword were more fortunate than those smitten by hunger."
A great change took place last year. There was a
time when it was said of America: "Open the gates and
let the righteous nation enter," but that time is gone. The
closing of the gates is a blow not only to Jews but also
to Judaism. The fountains at which we American Jews
have quenched our thirst have ceased to flow. The Jews
00 the other side of the Atlantic have been to us like a
"fountain of fresh water." Our brethren from Palestine,
Galicia. Lithuania and Poland. upon their arrival in this
country, implanted in us a love for all that is Jewish. New
blood was constantly infused in our veins. It is true that
every now and then there visits us a guest from the Jewish
centers abroad, but we can not thus be satisfied. We must
not forget for a moment that we are living through a very
critical moment and, unless we offer great sacrifices upon
the altar of Judaism in this country, we are lost.
On Rosh Hashonah we blow the horn of a rain, which
reminds us of the virtuous deed of Abraham in offering his
son Isaac as a urnt offering. It is mentioned in connection
with this event that "both of them walked together." That
means that Abraham's bringing up of his son Isaac was
such that it kept father and son together. The blowing
of the horn reminds us of our past and sounds a warning
for our future. It tells us that the fathers should keep the
children close to them so that they should not go astray.
Besides, the sound of the horn brings to our memory
the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai, upon which oc-
casion the voice of the Shofar was "exceedingly strong."
It exhorts us to take heed concerning our future, in which
the study of the Torah, as given on Mount Sinai, should not
be neglected. so that we may implant in the hearts of our
children the love for our language, our nation, and our
fatherland, Zion.
